PPI Suppressing Inflation, But So-So Helpful for Construction Material Costs
Joy was expressed by economic commentators when the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported May’s year-over-year change in the ‘headline’ Producer Price Index (PPI) to be a mere +1.2%. As Graph 1 illustrates, there’s a close correlation between changes in the Consumer Price Index (i.e., inflation) and changes in the top-level PPI number. The expectation is that the PPI’s +1.2% y/y will lead the inflation rate, currently +4.0% y/y, further downwards. Before examining some PPI results in detail, more background information is warranted.

George Brown College’s Limberlost Place
Toronto architect Mike Love says he’d be proud to be involved with any of the many prestigious building projects that are going on right now in the heart of his hometown. But if he had to choose one, the 39-year-old says it would be the amazing mass timber project he’s currently managing on the Six’s waterfront. What’s not to love about Limberlost Place? It’s the first tall wood building in Ontario and a striking 10-storey institutional structure with one underground level that incorporates an all-Canadian line up of unique manufactured materials, ecological innovations, and novel engineering and design features.
