From Your

Associational Mission Strategist

Our Summer Camps are underway. We had our girls camp last week and our boys camp is going on as I write this. The girls had a great week, and the Lord moved in hearts and lives. I am anticipating the boys camp to go as well. Pray for our Day Camp as it begins next week. I really appreciate those who have been praying and for the churches who have been providing the meals. The cooperative effort from our churches is a blessing and we could not do the camps without you! I also appreciate several of the churches who have sent in additional money for our camp so we will have the funding that is needed to take care of the cost of the maintaining the campground.

I wanted to give a brief update on the actions taken at the Southern Baptist Convention. First, I believe that our convention is strong and is heading in the right direction. We elected a President (Willy Rice) who is a strong biblical conservative. The major action that was taken was a vote on an amendment from Dr. Al Mohler who is President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The amendment was to reinforce what is already in the Baptist Faith and Message in regard to the position of a Pastor.

The Baptist Faith and Message (BF&M) 2000 — adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention — states in Article VI: The Church that “Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture”.

The Mohler Amendment, formally called the Truth and Unity Amendment, was proposed to amend Article III, Paragraph 1 of the SBC Constitution. Its purpose is to make explicit that a cooperating Southern Baptist church “does not act to affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, specifically preaching to the assembled congregation”

The amendment strengthens the SBC Constitution by making explicit that a cooperating Southern Baptist church does not affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of pastor, elder, or overseer, including preaching to the assembled congregation in that role. This provides greater constitutional clarity as the Convention addresses questions regarding church cooperation.

In addition to this action, messengers adopted several resolutions that clearly expressed our biblical convictions on a number of important cultural issues. Along with the business sessions, we experienced meaningful worship and faithful, Christ-centered preaching throughout the Convention.

Thank you for allowing me to serve alongside you. I continue to pray for every pastor and every congregation in the South Central Baptist Network. It is truly a joy and privilege to serve you.
