MHRB Blog: Four Ways to Recharge

(Without a Vacation!)

Summer is here, and many people are looking forward to taking a break from work, school, or other responsibilities. A vacation is a great way to combat stress and burnout, but not everyone has the time, budget, or flexibility to travel far from home.

If a summer getaway isn’t in the cards for you, don’t worry. There are still ways you can rest, recharge, and take care of your mental well-being, all without leaving town.

MHRB awarded $200,000 Strong Families, Strong Communities grant

MHRB has been awarded $200,000 with the FY27 Strong Families Safe Communities grant! This grant provides financial support to continue multiple projects that benefit families and children. This includes school-based treatment services at learning centers in both Warren and Clinton Counties, clinical services within juvenile detention centers for Clinton County youth, and intensive home-based treatment (IHBT) services for youth in Warren and Clinton Counties. The funding expands beyond prior SFSC grant efforts by strengthening upstream prevention strategies that build resilience and protective factors for youth and families.

Research has demonstrated that positive childhood experiences (PCEs) such as nurturing relationships, stable environments, and opportunities for engagement are strongly associated with improved mental and physical health outcomes, even with the presence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The Youth Wellbeing Inventory (YWBI) is a comprehensive, CDC-approved assessment that measures PCEs, resiliency, and health-risk behaviors among students in grades 7-12.

During the 2024-2025 school year (through financial support from MHRB), over 4,000 students across Warren County completed the YWBI. The YWBI results indicated a need to expand opportunities that foster connection, belonging, and youth engagement. To address the identified gaps, the FY27 SFSC project focuses on increasing positive childhood experiences throughout the communities we serve.

What the Board Does, Part 2: Focus on Funding

Did you know that one of MHRB's most important responsibilities is funding the local organizations that provide mental health and addiction services in our communities?

As outlined in Ohio Revised Code Chapter 340, MHRB is responsible for planning, evaluating, and funding a comprehensive system of behavioral health care for local residents. MHRB utilizes funding from the federal and state governments - along with local support from a levy - to contract with qualified community provider organizations to ensure people have access to prevention, treatment, crisis intervention, recovery supports, housing assistance, and other vital services.

Each year, MHRB works closely with providers and community partners to assess local needs and invest public resources where they can have the greatest impact. This funding helps thousands of Warren and Clinton County residents access care close to home, regardless of their ability to pay. By supporting a strong network of provider agencies, MHRB helps ensure that help, hope, and recovery are available when and where they are needed most.

Small Steps Matter:

Quizzes Help to Check In with Yourself

If someone's ever told you that you might have an issue with alcohol or drug use, or if you're just curious about evaluating your own use, the new e-prevention tool on the MHRB website might be a great place to help figure things out.

Anyone can use the surveys anonymously. You'll get feedback on your use of alcohol or substances, tips to curb your consumption, and places to turn for help if you'd like. If you're concerned about a friend or family member, you'll get tips on how to start a conversation. And there is also a general quiz to test your knowledge!

In addition, clients already in treatment will have access to a support app designed to offer access to chat with a live person any time, day or night.

MHRB is one of three Ohio boards using the e-prevention tool and the first in southwest Ohio. To try the tool for yourself, visit the e-Prevention tool page our website.

Can't call in a crisis? Use the Crisis Text Line

Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pick up a phone and call someone.

Here's the good news: you can text for help at any time! Chat with a trained person by texting "HELLO" to 741741. That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7. Just send a message!
