Match Day 2023 Welcomes Largest
Family Medicine Class in History
A record 4,530 family medicine residency positions were filled across the country, and for the 14th year in a row the number of family medicine positions available in the Match increased. That is more than 60 more than last year’s Match and 47 more than the previous record-breaking class in 2021.
Listen to MAFP member, Richard Easterling, AAFP student board member, describe why he chose family medicine. Richard will join us at the Spring Fling next month to share with our medical student attendees the opportunities MAFP and AAFP have given him and how important networking is, even as a student.

Session Highlight: Healthy Finances, Tips for Financial Planning and Debt Management
Practicing medicine is rewarding and enjoyable but some day you may want to slow down a bit. Tips will be shared how to get you on track for retirement.
Student loans and finance education are not usually covered in medical school or residency; yet, these are important topics that impact every young physician.
Please join Advisor Beau Hill from Longview Planning as he shares how to navigate these complex topics as it can determine the level of comfort and success in your career. On Saturday, Beau will present to both groups, the students and residents and the practicing physicians.

Preceptors – please share the Spring Fling opportunity with any students who are working with you in the next few months.
The MAFP Foundation is excited to sponsor the 9th Annual Future in Family Medicine Spring Fling on April 22 at the Sheraton Refuge in Flowood. This conference is specifically designed for medical students and residents. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the MAFP Spring Conference for practicing physicians, so there will be opportunities to network while gaining exposure to speakers, topics, and procedural skills that attendees might not have access to during medical school or residency training.
Exhibitors will be on hand including family medicine residencies, rural hospitals, and other employers. Students and residents will have the opportunity to run for the Academy and Foundation boards. Topics include interviewing tips, debt management, new physician panels, contract negotiations, speed dating through the types of family medicine, and procedural workshops. The conference is free to attend and will offer overnight rooms for out-of-town students and residents.

AAFP Recommends Action to Prevent SUD Care Disruption
Among the AAFP wins in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 was the removal of the X-waiver—an administrative burden that hindered access to life-saving medications for treatment of opioid use disorder (MOUD). The same legislation requires SAMHSA and the DEA to implement a new training requirement for all licensed prescribers of controlled substances.
This new law will require prescribers of controlled substances in schedules II, III, IV and V to complete a one-time eight hour training prior to their first registration or renewal of their Drug Enforcement Agency license on or after June 21, 2023.
- Accept qualifying educational offerings that are certified under the AAFP credit system, the primary source of continuing education for nearly 130,000 family physicians
- Clarify that clinicians who have already completed safe prescribing and SUD treatment training will not have to complete duplicative trainings to satisfy new training requirements.
- Ensure training and reporting requirements do not cause care disruptions or significant administrative burden.
More details on the issue can be read here.
