Translation, Health, and Food Safety
From food production to nutrition labels, translators and interpreters are integral to the health and safety of distributing food to an international market.

Food label translators must translate from a variety of perspectives; often, they translate marketing copy, technical product information, and legal language. For example, phrases like “skinny” on health food packaging may not make sense when translated into other languages. Products that are over-the-counter supplements in the U.S. may even be considered medicine – and regulated as such – in other countries. Consumers must know the content of what they are eating!

In Europe, the EU Regulation (EU) No 2269/2011 around provision of food information to consumers states that "mandatory food information shall appear in a language easily understood by the consumers of the Member States where a food is marketed." It is understandable for manufacturers not to translate their labels to save space and money. Consumers who cannot speak the local language need to know the basics such as ingredients, weight, content percentages, and price. If foreigners understand the content of the product, they will be more likely to buy it, thus boosting sales.

And the Canadian Government has new Bilingual Food Packaging Requirements for 2021. Here are some highlights:

  • % daily values revised based on updated science
  • New % daily value for total sugars added
  • List of nutrients updated to add potassium, and remove both vitamin A and vitamin C
  • Amounts in milligrams (mg) added for potassium, calcium, and iron
  • Footnote about % daily value added at the bottom of the table to help consumers understand how much sugar and other nutrients such as sodium are in their food.
