Happy Friday Gilroy!
It's a question on many minds and one perhaps we should be asking ourselves and our neighbors:
While it may seem like the roundabout in the image above is a two-lane roundabout, this is actually a one-lane roundabout with a right turn lane. This right turn lane is similar to a free right turn at a four-way signalized intersection. Drivers wanting to proceed through the roundabout should stay in the main lane while drivers wanting to make a right turn should shift into the right turn lane.

When navigating roundabouts with this specific configuration, drivers wishing to proceed through the roundabout should not shift into the right turn lane. The right turn lane is solely for making right turns.

Additionally, drivers in both the main lane and the right turn lane should only enter the roundabout when there is a big enough gap in traffic to merge safely.

For more tips on driving roundabouts visit the California Department of Transportation.

PG&E Scheduled for Work at the Intersection of Old Gilroy Street and Chestnut Street
PG&E is scheduled to start work near the intersection of Old Gilroy Street and Chesnut Street.  Work is anticipated to start on Monday, June 10, 2019, and is anticipated to continue through approximately mid-August. This work may affect traffic (lane closures, traffic control, etc.) at times. Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Traffic control will start setting up at 7:00 a.m. during construction. PG&E will clearly mark all work areas, and traffic flaggers will help to direct traffic. Please plan for minor delays when driving through this area.

Based upon information we received from PG&E, this project involves installing a new pressure regulator with a more modern system and work should not interrupt gas service.
PG&E Community Wildfire Safety Program
PG&E has announced an expanded Community Wildfire Safety Program as an additional precautionary measure to further reduce wildfire risks and help keep communities safe.

In addition, PG&E has warned customers to be prepared for power outages or Public Safety Power Shutoffs. PG&E has explained that if extreme fire danger conditions threaten a portion of the electric system serving our community, it will be necessary for PG&E to turn off electricity in the interest of public safety.

What PG&E Wants You to Know About Public Safety Power Shutoffs:
  • Before any Public Safety Power Shutoff, PG&E carefully reviews a combination of criteria such as predictions of strong winds and very low humidity levels, along with critically dry vegetation and on-the-ground observations from field crews.
  • Because the energy system relies on power lines working together to provide electricity across cities, counties and regions, your power may be shut off, even if you do not live or work in an area experiencing high winds or other extreme weather conditions. This is done for the safety of all communities and customers.
  • When PG&E needs to turn off your power, they will attempt to contact you in advance by phone, text and email, and provide updates through social media, local news, radio and the pge.com website.
  • PG&E expects to be able to visually inspect the system for damage and restore power to most customers within 24 to 48 hours after extreme weather has passed. Because extreme weather can last several hours or days, for planning purposes, they suggest customers prepare for outages that could last longer than 48 hours.
