The Month of May - Time to Celebrate!

Congratulations to our graduates!

Graduations, and celebrations, and all of the excitement and anticipation, that is what we can look forward to in May! And we can't forget summer time, vacations, and bar-b-ques too! The month of May has to be the most exciting time of the school year. Have our students accepted their admissions or decided on their path beyond high school? Have our college freshmen enrolled for their sophomore year? Let's keep the momentum going, finish strong, and plan for an amazing Year 7!

Summer Bridge Program at UNLV

We are excited to welcome over 60 GEAR UP rising seniors to Summer Bridge with UNLV GEAR UP ASPIRE this June! Students from all Southern Nevada GEAR UP high schools will meet at UNLV for two days of college and career activities and social connection. Participants will also hear from representatives from the U.S. military, Nevada State University, the College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, and the University of Nevada, Reno. From past summers, we know that these connections will boost students' readiness for their postsecondary plans!

And the Winner is.....

We've been talking about it for a few months now. The inaugural Nevada FAFSA Challenge was launched this year and we have our first winning high school! Of course it is a GEAR UP high school! Mineral County High School had the greatest improvement in their FAFSA completion rate for all eligible schools. MCHS improved their completion rate by 53%!! Congratulations to MCHS students and staff as well as everyone that helped make it happen. Special shout out to FYCA Kelly Briggs who helped host a FAFSA night in early December which was hugely successful and most likely contributed to this win. MCHS will be recognized at a future NSHE Board of Regents meeting where they will be presented with a personalized banner they can display for the next school year, and they will receive the $1,000 prize money! Way to go Serpents!

Congratulations Ana!

We are delighted to congratulate our Communications Specialist/Student Worker, Ana Hernandez-Wong, who recently graduated from UNR with her bachelor's degree. Ana double majored in International Affairs and Political Science. She hopes to one day, go to law school. Unfortunately, along with this great news, we also have to say good-bye to Ana. She has accepted a position with a law firm in the Reno area. She said she appreciated the opportunity to work for GEAR UP and that her experience will help her in her new role as she will be handling the social media for the firm. She will continue to advocate for our GEAR UP program!

Wishing you the best of luck as you start you new position, Ana! We will miss you!

NACADA Regional Conference

In April, NSHE GEAR UP staff Jana Burd and Kinsey Minter attended the NACADA Region 5 conference in Chicago, IL. Using the theme, “Building Skyscrapers: The Architecture of Advising”, this conference welcomed student affairs professionals from around and outside of the midwest to learn more about academic advising in a variety of ways. From leadership development and student support, to cross-departmental collaboration and self-care, a wide range of topics were covered throughout the three-day conference. Attendees learned from the presenters and each other about how they can improve as both professionals and people. The NACADA Annual conference will be held in Las Vegas, NV on October 26-29, 2025. We are looking forward to learning and growing more to better serve our students, ourselves, and each other!
