The “Cavemen of Cumberland” have roots in the Chicago Fire Department from 1865. Engine 11 and Truck 9 started out downtown on Hubbard Street Engine 11’s first house burnt down during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. A new 1 bay firehouse was built on the same site in 1872. In 1923 Engine 11 made the last horse drawn run to Box 848 at Chicago and State, after that run the city was fully motorized. In 1928 Truck 9 would move in with Engine 11.
In 1968 the firehouse was closed, Engine 11, and Truck 9 would be out of service until 1974 when the new firehouse on the far Northwest side opened. The house responds to O’Hare airport as well as protecting the edge of the city limits.
Truck 9’s first rig in the new house was the 1973 American LaFrance rearmost which has been produced by Fire Replicas. Today, Engine 11 runs a 2019 E-One Cyclone pumper, while Truck 9 runs a 2010 Spartan 103’ rear mount. Both models are in stock, and this would be an ideal station set for Chicago. - Courtesy of Joe O'Brien
