Members of the Cattaraugus County Sheriffs’ Office gathered to have their heads shaved as a demonstration of solidarity with 10-year-old Colt Matz, citizen of the county (and friend of Sheriff Whitcomb’s son), who has lost his hair during his fight against leukemia AML. The Sheriff said, “I gave Colt one of our CCSO Special Response Team Challenge Coins to let him know he is part of a very special training group of fighters / helpers. I then challenged our team to help Colt know we are in the trenches with him. The result is this video, which we presented to Colt. He is admitted at Children's Hospital in Buffalo and will remain there for treatment and bone marrow transplant. Just a good story I hope and pray has a happy ending.”

The Committee on Policing and Safeguarding Schools (C-PASS) held its second specialized training for School Resource Officers and Deputies from around the state, this time hosted by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
The voluntary one-week pilot course at the Sheriff’s Ballston Spa facility provided basic-level classes developed by staff from the Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety, in consultation with the New York State Sheriffs’ Association and subject-matter experts including state and local educators, and state and local law enforcement officers. The training was a pilot basic training course, aimed at creating a standardized curriculum leading to state certification for officers who become school resource officers in New York State. At the conclusion of the two C-Pass pilot programs, the curriculum was presented to the MPTC, where it received approval and adoption at the September MPTC meeting, and attendees of the two classes were awarded state certification thereafter.

Twenty-nine officers from 16 agencies attended the training in Saratoga County, with an additional 27 officers from 12 agencies attending the pilot program in Bath, Steuben County, in July.
