Colonial High School
CHS Community Member
We are now down to the final week of the school year with our seniors preparing for Wednesday afternoon's commencement ceremony at the Kia Center. Here is the YouTube link to view Wednesday's graduation which begins at 2:00 p.m.

Please remember that backpacks will not be allowed during the last two days of school this week: Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24. Students may bring a small (6") clutch or crossbody on these days.

In each Colonial Connection edition this school year, our overarching goal was to share a few success stories with the community from recent days and once again, our Grenadiers do not disappoint. Heading into these final days of 2023-2024, both students and staff continue to earn praise for their achievements!

While we are looking forward to the summer break, please make sure that you find time this week to make connections with teachers, staff, and classmates you may not see again or at least until next school year. With respect to the 2024-2025 school year, below you will find information for our annual Grenadiers Marching Back special event to be held on Thursday, August 8 (the new school year begins on Monday, August 12).

Grenadiers, enjoy this final week of 2023-2024 and CONGRATULATIONS COLONIAL HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2024! We will see our seniors this Wednesday for what will be a very exciting and memorable graduation ceremony!

It's Great To Be A Grenadier!

FAFSA Family Day
School counselors helped our seniors complete the FAFSA application during the FAFSA Family Day!
Colonial community footnote: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

A student's financial aid package is one of the most important factors in students’ college decisions. Financial aid helps students pay for college through grants, scholarships, work-study and student loans. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid awards more than $114 billion in federal financial aid to students each year. However, to access this financial aid, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA by a specific deadline. Filling out the FAFSA can be a daunting task, so our Colonial counselors were very happy to help seniors and their families with the online paperwork!

Speech and Debate Team
Ethan Mills' legislation will be debated at the National Tournament!
As the year comes to an end, we are so pleased to share another CHS Speech and Debate success! While our team was planning on attending Nationals this summer, we aren't able to due to personal commitments. Nevertheless, Colonial Speech and Debate will be represented!

Students around the country were invited to submit their own congressional legislation to be debated at the National tournament in Iowa. Our very own Ethan Mills wrote a piece of legislation and submitted it (below). This past week we found out that not only was it chosen to be debated at the National tournament, but it will be debated in the semi-final round. This is a huge accomplishment on Ethan's part. He will be featured in the NSDA's Rostrum magazine, be awarded a plaque, and he won a $100 scholarship for this achievement.

Give Ethan a big high five next time you see him! We can't wait to see you in the 2024-2025 season!
2024 Summer Fellowship
Application deadline is Tuesday!
Application deadline is May 21st.
As a part of her commitment to increasing student voices and leadership opportunities, School Board Member Maria Salamanca is proud to announce the launch of her 2024 Summer Fellowship! The Fellowship opportunity is part of her vision to work closely with student leaders in District 2 high schools (Colonial, Lake Nona, and now Innovation) over the summer on various projects that expose them to local public policy, develop workforce skills, and give back to the school district.

📅 The fellowship is a 2-month (June-August), 10 hours per week commitment.

📝 Each Fellow will have a project they will complete over the length of their Fellowship that aligns with their areas of interest related to education and their school community.

💼 Member Salamanca will pair each Fellow with a mentor in career areas each fellow is interested in.

💰There is a stipend available for those who are selected.
All non-rising Freshmen and non-graduating Seniors (10th, 11th, 12th) over the age of 16 are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Applications will take a holistic approach, looking at a student's overall motivations and involvement in their community so far.

The deadline to apply is May 21st at 7 pm, students can apply at https://tiny.cc/MSFellow24. Questions? Email Dariel Cruz Rodriguez, program coordinator, at dariel.cruzrodriguez@ocps.net.
