Upcoming June Plat Review Officer Trainings

The Land Records Management Program of the NC Secretary of State offers trainings for Plat Review Officers and others who work with approval of surveys for recording.

These workshops are critical training for those who are or aspire to be appointed as Plat Review Officers under GS 47-30.2, but is also highly useful for Surveyors, Planners, Register of Deeds Staff, or anyone else who deals with survey plats and plat approval processes.

We offer these workshops both virtually, once per quarter, as well as in-person when we have someone willing to host us and we think there will be a reasonable demand. We HIGHLY encourage folks to take advantage of the in-person training when it's available and convenient. As we've just had an in-person training in Concord in May, and now we're having one in the Northeastern part of the state.

The next in-person workshop will be Tuesday, June 23rd in Halifax NC.

The next virtual workshop will be Wednesday, June 24th via our WebEx Platform.

Both are 4-hour workshops running from 1-5pm with a 15-minute break in the middle.

Both workshop options are free, but pre-registration is required.

The workshop (via either method) is good for 4 hours of credit for Property Mappers*, Surveyors and Registers of Deeds/staff. For other certification programs, please check with your certification administration organization for questions of credit acceptance.

*Note: This workshop may be used twice for a maximum of 8 hours credit toward a single 2-year renewal cycle for State Certified Property Mappers.

The location of the June 23rd In-Person Workshop is the Halifax County Ag Center, located at 359 Ferrell Ln, Halifax NC 27839. Attendance is capped at 100 participants and registration closes the Friday prior on June 19th. We'll also be doing a 90-minute Plat eRecording presentation there that morning. (no registration required, just reach out for details)

We highly recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to attend one of these in-person offerings take advantage of it, as participants can more easily ask questions and participate.

Registration for the June 24th Virtual Workshop also closes at midnight on June 19th. Attendance is capped at 200. Those registering by the deadline will be sent the virtual link the afternoon of June 22nd. (We'll do a batch invitation). If you attempted to register and do not receive the invitation by the day prior, please be sure to reach out to us. Unfortunately the online registration tool does NOT send any form of automatic confirmation.

This will be our second virtual workshop offering of the year, but we offer this quarterly, so if you're unable to make that date, you can be confident we will repeat the workshop in September and quarterly afterwards.

Reach out: If you ever have any questions about GS 47-30, Review Officer, or general plat approval issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We can't necessarily answer questions specifically related to the planning-specific questions, as they're often highly dependent upon the local jurisdiction's ordinances, but can often address issues about various exemptions set out in statewide statutes. Email is often better than calling, as you can send a scan of the maps or other documents in question, which helps us to see the full picture. We're also frequently out of the office for meetings, conferences, or doing trainings.
