Tips to Help Prevent Memory Loss
As another year goes by, it can be easy to start worrying about what problems we might face as we get older. It’s never too early or too late to start thinking about taking steps to improve our health to try to lower our risk of developing dementia in life in life. We asked Dr. Patrick Coll in the UConn Center on Aging for some guidance helping prevent or delay memory loss.

In December 2013, UConn Health opened the doors for medical services in Storrs. Unbelievably, it has been 10 years already and we have grown tremendously within those 10 years. We were wondering if there were any plans for a 10-year celebration?
Thank you for your question, and the answer is yes! We started in Storrs with a family medicine physician (Dr. Moore) and two orthopedic sports medicine physicians (Dr. Edgar and Dr. Hall). Today we have additional services including dermatology, cardiology, vascular surgery, women’s health, behavioral health, pulmonology, and greatly expanded orthopedic services. UMG Storrs had nearly 35,000 patient visits last fiscal year, and that doesn’t include the nearly 16,000 visits to the urgent care center, which opened there in 2014. Anne Horbatuck, our COO for UMG / ambulatory services, calls our Storrs location “a fantastic site and it is truly part of the UConn Community as well as the local community.”

I couldn’t agree more. Congratulations and thank you to our wonderful staff who’ve made this tremendous growth possible. The photo is from the celebration of the UConn Medical Group’s 10 years in Storrs Center Dec. 14. Thank you for bringing this up, as it’s important to recognize the fantastic work we do in the communities we serve throughout the state. Cheers to our Storrs location, to all of our off-campus sites, and all the people who contribute to their success!
Happy holidays, and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2024!

Wrapping up 2023 Word of the Month Campaign
As the year comes to a close, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion would like to thank everyone across our academic medical center for supporting and celebrating our people and shared values: courage, integrity, teamwork, excellence, leadership, innovation, diversity, equity, inclusion, kindness, respect, and gratitude. “These words resonate with our collective and institutional core values,” says Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Jeffrey Hines. “Individuals and units continue to pause to reflect on these words on a regular basis. They are using these words to drive conversations around sustaining an inclusive work environment grounded in a foundation of a language of mutual respect. They are driving the evolution in culture we strive to achieve together.” Stay tuned for upcoming Word of the Month workforce spotlights in 2024 (read past monthly articles on UConn Today anytime), and check out the new, large celebratory mural now up in Garage 1.
