Letter From Noel Green

Greetings McAuliffe Community,

One Month Down—and So Much to Celebrate!

It is hard to believe, but we have officially completed our **first month of school!** It has been a busy and productive month, and there is so much to celebrate and share with our McAuliffe community.

Connecting with Our 7th and 8th Grade Families

Thank you to all of the families who attended our 7th and 8th Grade Back-to-School Nights. We hope the evenings gave you a better understanding of your scholar’s experience at McAuliffe and provided a valuable opportunity to connect with teachers and Crew Leaders.

A special thank you to the 7th grade families who shared stories from their scholars about the recent whitewater rafting trip. Hearing directly from our students about their experiences is one of the best ways to understand the impact of these important McAuliffe traditions.

For families who had not previously visited our Adventure Center, we were especially glad you had the opportunity to see where our scholars learn, challenge themselves, build confidence, and support one another. And remember—if you want to come climb, just let us know!

We look forward to seeing everyone at our first culminating event of the year.

An Important Step in Our Charter Renewal

As a public charter school in Massachusetts, McAuliffe undergoes a formal renewal process every five years through the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The renewal process includes an ongoing review of our school’s performance and how effectively we are fulfilling our mission and serving our students.

We are currently in the final stages of our renewal review. As part of this process, an educational consulting team visited McAuliffe on Thursday to observe our school in action.

During the visit, the consultants had the opportunity to speak with a group of our scholars about their experiences at McAuliffe. These conversations are an important part of the review because they allow us to hear directly from the young people at the center of everything we do.

The site visit provided us with an opportunity to showcase the many ways we support our scholars, while also giving us meaningful feedback about areas where we can continue to grow and improve. I am incredibly grateful to our staff for all of the preparation, hard work, and care that went into making the visit a success.

The Bookmobile Is Coming Back!

We are also excited to announce that the Bookmobile is returning to McAuliffe this school year! Beginning Monday, October 5, our scholars will once again have access to this wonderful resource.

For our new families, the Bookmobile is an actual library bus operated by the local library that travels to schools throughout MetroWest. Students can browse and select books directly from the Bookmobile, or they can reserve books from the library’s larger collection and have those books delivered to school through the Bookmobile.

Please encourage your scholar to take advantage of this wonderful resource and read as much as they can!

Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you for your continued partnership and support!

Warmly,

Noel Green

Picture Day is Coming!

As a reminder, Picture Day is next Friday, October 9th! Picture order forms were distributed in Crew this week. Please check your child’s backpack and review the form carefully if you plan to purchase a package.

Please know that families have the option to pre-order and pre-pay online! The directions are as follows:

- Visit www.grynnandbarrett.com

- Select “Order Portraits”

- Enter code 3A6X6T9Z and click “login”

- Browse your options and prepay!

Once you do this, you’re done! Your child will have their photo taken Friday, October 9th and Grynn&Barrett will match your student to the picture package you ordered online.

Other Important Information:

If you decide NOT to prepay and you will be using the paper form with cash or a check included in the envelope provided, please DO NOT send it to the school prior to Picture Day. Have your child bring that form directly to the photographer when they go for their picture.

If your child is absent on Picture Day, we will be having Picture Retake Day on November 20th. More information will be provided in a future Friday Newsletter.

All students will have their picture taken on Picture Day. Only those students who place an order will receive a picture package in a few weeks.

Any questions can be sent to Abby Lyons at alyons@mcauliffecharter.org.

McAuliffe Grading System

Our aim at McAuliffe is for grades to serve as clear communication to families and students about how students are progressing in terms of both academic content and Habits of Scholarship. 6th grade families who were able to attend Back to School Night, and returning families who attended Back to School Nights in the past, have heard a presentation about our grading system. We use Standards Based Grading. Some key features of our approach are:

- Student grades on report cards reflect what they know and are able to do at the end of the term, not an average.

- Students receive grades on Habits of Scholarship and academic targets separately, so it is clear how they are progressing on each set of skills.

-Most students will earn a grade on a 1-3 scale, with 1 indicating that they are in the early stages of learning content but have a substantial need for growth, a 2 indicating that they are moving towards understanding of the target, and a 3 indicating that they have met the target. Students can also earn a 4 if they choose to complete a teacher-directed, higher level extention of a target. If studentds have not completed sufficient work to be assessed in a target, they will earn a grade of 0.

You can see much more information about our approach to grading by reading the following link McAuliffe Family Grading Guide.
