Dear St. Alphonsus Families,
We had an amazing Catholic Schools Week! Please check out some of the pictures below and also check out our Facebook and Instagram pages to see all the coverage! One of our favorite parts was the all-school brunch & service project after mass on Wednesday. It was so nice for students and staff to have some fellowship together.
In addition to Catholic Schools Week, last week we also hosted an important safety training here at St. Alphonsus. It was a Behavioral Threat Assessment & Management Training and was hosted by the Archdiocese here in our Community Room. School administrators, school mental health professionals, security personnel and law enforcement attended, with the goal of gaining an understanding of why threat assessment is an important part of violence prevention in schools. The training included lectures, discussions, and tabletop scenarios. Josh Kaul, Attorney General, also attended and held a press conference here (you can see a picture of this here). We were very proud not only to host but to have our school leaders attend--as you know, safety is of the utmost importance to us and this training adds another layer to our safety plan.
On a related note, Karen Farrell, our Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, is hosting another Safeguarding class on February 12 from 4 to 7pm. It will be limited to 10-12 individuals and take place here at St. Alphonsus. If you need to complete your Safeguard training, this is a great opportunity for you! Please contact Karen for more information.
Also last week, we sent home Intent to Return forms to every family. These forms assist us as we begin to plan for next year. Forms are due Wednesday, February 7 and we thank you for returning them in a timely manner. The Leadership Team is very excited as we think about next year and we thank you for helping us as we begin to plan!
Please be sure to check out all the other great stuff in this newsletter, and have a great week!
Best regards,
Ms. Parey, Principal
Mrs. Schermetzler & Mrs. Bruhn, Leadership Team

8th Grade Social Studies Tries to Balance the Federal Budget
8th Grade Social Studies is U.S. Government, where we learn all about how the United States government was built, as well as how it works today. In our most recent unit on the Legislative Branch, students completed a Federal Budget Simulation.
The class was divided into groups. Each group was then divided further into 2 Senators and 3 members of the House of Representatives. These smaller groups had to work together to come up with a budget. After the 2 groups finalized their budgets, they had to come together as a group of 5 and finalize a budget they could all agree on. THAT budget then had to be approved by Mrs. Schermetzler (the President).
Students worked with real numbers and learned about things like tax revenue and mandatory vs. discretionary spending!

A Message From Christian Formation | |
Hello everyone,
I have a dream. And your kids are part of it!
I dream that our world becomes radically transformed by the love of God. I long for each of your sons and daughters to experience this reality first hand. And, I want them to take this encounter out into the rest of the world.
I long for the hungry to be fed, lost to be found and those who feel lonely and isolated to recognize that they have place to belong - and they are necessary!
I believe that the youth of St. Al's can bring this reality about. I know they all have a desire to do great things. And they can. Why? Because God has given them unique gifts the world needs. And, God put them in this time in history because He knows that your kids have what the world needs right now!
See this link for the different opportunities we have to offer the teens to help them to connect to God and bring Him into the world!
Yours In Christ,
Karen Farrell
Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry
