Companies moving sales towards the healthiest half of products within each food category could substantially reduce healthcare costs and also prevent approximately $11.6 billion in lost pay due to diet-related ill health.

The study noted that healthier options already exist across these sectors, meaning that many benefits could be achieved through portfolio shifts and product reformulation.

What's even worse? According to a study from Nutrients, 71% of 651 baby foods from major U.S. retailers qualify as ultra-processed, containing additives primarily used for flavor, color, and texture. Every single baby cereal and starch product studied was ultra-processed, with some items containing up to 56 separate ingredients.

Steve: You may be aware that there has been a slow descent in fertility in recent years. While there are myriad reasons why this is occurring, in which many cases require intense individual and couples analysis, there are simple ways to improve fertility, pregnancy, and offspring outcomes.

According to a study from Human Reproduction, men who eat more ultra-processed foods are more likely to face fertility challenges. While women’s intake didn’t affect time to pregnancy, it was linked to early embryo size. The study suggests both partners’ diets matter before conception. It is important to note that these patterns emerged in a healthy population. Participants were largely well-educated, and their ultra-processed food consumption was below national averages.

A study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the impact of weekly preconception prenatal or iron and folic acid supplements compared to folic acid alone, on cognitive function and nutritional status at 10-11 years of age. Offspring in the prenatal and iron and folic acid groups had higher perceptual reasoning scores. The iron and folic groups also had higher reading scores and lower anemia prevalence. Exclusive breastfeeding was also linked with higher mathematics scores. In addition, a study from JAMA Network Open found that children whose mothers received 2800 IU of vitamin D3 daily from 24 weeks of gestation to 1 week postpartum showed slight improvement on memory tests at 10 years of age compared to those whose mothers received a standard dose.

Finally, pregnant individuals who sat for more than 10 hours daily faced a higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes than those who sat for around 7 hours daily, according to a study from JAMA. Conversely, engaging in very high patterns of light-intensity physical activity was associated with a reduced risk for adverse outcomes.
