TRAC TALK

MORE ABOUT THE TEXTILE BINS

In last month's TRAC TALK, there was a photo of the white textile bins at the Salisbury/Sharon Transfer Station. Below you will find an attachment with the full list of what is accepted in those bins. Bay State Textiles collects textiles weekly, then cleans, and sorts the donations. About 45% of donations is clothing that can be reused; 30% becomes rags or wiping cloths; and 20% becomes re-purposed textile fibers that can create a new product.

JANE LLOYD CLAMBAKE

On July 25th, at the annual Clambake fundraiser -- full of joyful, grateful, and compassionate people -- the Salisbury/Sharon Transfer Station put together a group of volunteers who collected over 400 pounds of food scraps, diverting that weight from the garbage container. For the third year, the dedicated organizers of the Jane Lloyd Clambake have worked with the Transfer Station to make the the food scraps collection more efficient. If Salisbury and Sharon residents follow that lead for their own events, we could further reduce the solid waste stream.

TRANSFER STATION STICKERS

New stickers will be available after July 1; purchased at Town Hall or by mail. Stickers should be affixed to your vehicle’s windshield before August 11th.

Every resident in the towns of Salisbury and Sharon must pay a User Fee (aka Sticker Fee). Even if you use a hauler (ex. Richard Ralph or Welsh Sanitation) to transport your material to the facility, their arrangement with you does not include the User Fee Sticker cost. This fee must be paid whether you use the station during the year or not. Once paid, you will receive a sticker that will allow you access to the station throughout the year, should you decide to go with your own vehicle. Your current (green) sticker is valid through August 11th, 2026.

2.   Forms will be available at Town Hall and online at: https://www.salisburysharontransferstation.com

3.  You must pay for the sticker(s) at Town Hall by Cash/Check/credit card (There is a processing fee for credit cards).

To return by, mail to: Selectmen's Secretary, PO Box 548, Salisbury, CT 06068

2026 ANNUAL HOUSATONIC HERITAGE AREA WALKS ANNOUNCED

5 Autumn Weekends of Free, Guided Regional Interpretive Tours

The Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area announces the 24th annual autumn Housatonic Heritage Walks in September.  A variety of 68 free, guided interpretive tours will be offered this autumn throughout The Berkshires, MA, and Litchfield County, CT (northwestern CT).

The public is invited to participate in these family-oriented, interpretive walks, offered in partnership with our region’s historic, cultural, and outdoor recreation organizations and the National Park Service. The Heritage Walks are the ideal opportunity to experience and learn about our region’s rich and varied local history.

Historians, naturalists, and environmentalists will lead participants on explorations through historic estate gardens and town districts, behind-the-scenes cultural site tours, nature walks, trail hikes, and tours of many of the industrial-site ruins that were once thriving local industries. There will be Native-American and African American history walks and an African-American history bike tour.

Detailed Heritage Walks brochures are available at libraries, post offices, and newspaper racks in major grocery stores in the region. The Walks schedule is also available at:  https://housatonicheritage.org/events/heritage-walks/
