Shark Bites
June 2021
Summer is right around the corner and our little nature center by the sea will be quite busy in the months ahead. We're thrilled that we've been able to bring back programming and even hosted our first members only event in over a year. While we're still following CDC guidelines, we're cautiously optimistic about the future here at the center. Read below for specifics about upcoming programs and events!

As you may know, our backyard expansion project has started and we can't wait to show off our new and improved space this fall. In the meantime, all of our exhibits are open (check our website for the latest updates) and the staff and volunteers are here to share all they know about our animal residents and our coastal environment.

We wish you a safe and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you here at Sandoway soon!

BUTTERFLY GARDEN
Check out the beautiful new signage in our butterfly garden! Designed by our Director of Education Evan Orellana, the signs provide education about the butterfly life cycle and different species of butterflies. And the pictures just don't do them justice so you'll have to come by in person to see it all for yourself!
NEW SANDOWAY RESIDENT
Say hello to our newest resident, Mr. Bubbles! Mr. Bubbles is an axolotl, an amphibian native to Mexico and critically endangered. He was born in captivity and was donated to Sandoway from a private party. Mr. Bubbles is here as an
ambassador for his species as well as to teach about the native species here in Florida called the Gulf Coast Waterdog. In fact, the name axolotl is an aztec word meaning water dog! Come by to discover more about this very unusual animal! And don't tell Ms. Bubbles the puffer fish that she's not the only Bubbles at Sandoway. She's quite the diva you know!
THE SANDOWAY SCOOP
If you've been following us on social media, you might have seen our Sandoway Scoop videos! With topics such as jelly fish, sea turtles, keeping snakes as pets, in depth info about our animal residents and so much more, our educators provide snippets of interesting information in under two minutes. Check out The Sandoway Scoop on our social media pages or on our YouTube Channel and become a subscriber!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Danae Ayra has been volunteering at Sandoway since July 2020. You can usually find her at the front desk, greeting visitors and answering questions about Sandoway. Danae says her favorite thing about volunteering at Sandoway is spending time with the other volunteers and staff. "I always look forward to talking to my friends about their week and telling them about mine. I love listening to the stories that they have and the advice they give. Every time I come in to volunteer I always know I’ll learn something new. It could be a new fact about snapping turtles or a story about not keeping crabs in your pockets!"

Danae is in her junior year at FAU High School and when she's not at Sandoway or at school, you can find her hanging out with friends or crocheting.

I asked our Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda Clough, to share her thoughts about Danae. "Danae started working as a front desk volunteer where she was great at making guests feel welcome at Sandoway. She found that she really enjoyed learning about the animals, their habitats and conservation, so she decided to step out of her comfort zone in order to start working with the animals. Danae enjoys her time here at Sandoway so much that she convinced her peers at FAU High School to come and volunteer at Sandoway which has led to the growth of our volunteer program. She is now approaching her 1 year anniversary here at the nature center, and I couldn't imagine Sandoway without her." We're big Danae fans as you can see!!

Join Danae and our volunteer staff! E-mail Amanda for more info!
