AROUND THE CLUB

Introducing

Calvin

______________

Member since 2009

Calvin Williams carries himself with a quiet maturity and thoughtful perspective well beyond his 18 years. Inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela, “As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same,” Calvin leads by example, contributing to the positive, welcoming atmosphere that defines the Liberty community. A member for 17 years, he’s someone many have quite literally watched grow into the person he is today.
In recent years, Calvin has found a new rhythm with strength training, making the most of the weightlifting equipment and continuing to build on his fitness journey. Still, basketball has always been at the heart of his time at Liberty. From longtime pickup games to the friendships formed along the way, he values the sense of community that’s grown on the court over the years. In fact, some of Calvin’s favorite memories come from time spent at the club with his brothers, jumping into spontaneous 3-on-3 games with whoever happens to be there. That sense of connection, both on and off the court, has been a steady influence in his approach to staying active and making wellness a part of everyday life.
As the seasons shift, Calvin is looking forward to the simple joy of stepping outside after a workout in a t-shirt and shorts, soaking in the warmth of spring sunshine. His ideal day? A Saturday morning that starts with eggs and bacon, followed by hours of pickup basketball, a solid lift, and then winding down with some hoops on TV and time with family. It’s a balance that reflects exactly what Liberty is all about: movement, connection, and enjoying the moments in between.

NUTRITION

Nutrition Facts

From the desk of Bethany Williston, M.S., Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at Liberty Athletic Club

As women experience perimenopause and menopause, their estrogen levels decrease. This leads to a slower metabolism, an accumulation of abdominal fat, and a loss of muscle and bone -- none of which feels good.

To counteract the effects of perimenopause and menopause, try making the following changes:

  • Maintain a minimum of 30 g of protein per meal and 15 g per snack.
  • Substitute a serving of fruit or veggies for a serving of bread/pasta/cereal at each meal.
  • Switch from saturated fats like lard and butter to healthy fats like olive oil and avocados.
  • Avoid processed foods like soda, frozen pizza, chips, and sweets.
  • Focus on fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Stop eating when you’re no longer hungry. Don’t wait until you’re full.
  • Prioritize sleep. When you’re tired, you’re more likely to crave unhealthy foods.
  • Take a daily calcium citrate supplement (aim for 1200 mg/day) to combat lower bone density caused by lower estrogen levels.
  • Ask your PCP to test your blood levels, as cholesterol and blood pressure increase after menopause.
  • Weight train 2 - 3 times a week to improve your muscle mass and speed up your metabolism.
