This Week's Broadcasts

New Jersey is home to an amazing array of traditional artists–each, a keeper of an age-old art form. This year, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts honored ten of them in the first-ever class of New Jersey Heritage Fellows. On this special edition of State of the Arts, we meet five: Peruvian percussionist Hector Morales; African-American storyteller Queen Nur; a master of centuries-old Korean dance, Lena Mija Kim; and the percussionist Juan Cartagena and dancer Nanette Hernández. The husband/wife duo combine their passion for social justice with the practice of Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena.

Dance Highlights

This month, we're dancing through the State of the Arts archives!

This 2013 story captured Carolyn Dorfman Dance as they celebrated 30 years. Carolyn started her dance company in Union, New Jersey, and the acclaimed ensemble has now performed around the world. Carolyn Dorfman uses movement as metaphor and tells stories through dance. She is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, and some of her major works honor her Jewish heritage. Other works tell more abstract stories, but humanity is always at the core.

Ylvia Asal honors her Anatolian heritage by creating “Oya,” traditional lace, helping to keep this centuries-old art form alive. Once used to trim headscarves, oya has long been a way for women throughout the wider Anatolian area to express themselves.
