~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time.

basketball_wood_floor.jpg

"A HUGE Bridgewater Youth Basketball THANK YOU to the BRRSD Facilities & Administrative staff who provide tremendous support for our presence in Bridgewater school gyms.

The individuals below and their teams have been instrumental in the execution of our biddy and travel leagues. Beyond their essential contributions when things go smoothly, when the unexpected inevitably comes up, though they are not the cause, they have repeatedly been the resolution, and at times have bent over backwards to accommodate our players and fans.

Having experienced first hand how vital their efforts are for the continued success of our programs, we can only imagine the impact they have in our school system as a whole. Whether you have a player in our programs, a student in our schools, or are a member of our Bridgewater community, they have earned our appreciation and gratitude many time over.

*Head Custodians*

Ed DeAndrade, Tim Bumpus, Jeff Oman, Mark Chiocca

*Administrative Staff*

Alice Akins, Tracy Taccini, Kathy Avtges, Judi Lowder

*Facilities*

Tom Killgoar & Kristen Geer

A special shout out to Ira at the Williams, who late in the 2022-2023 winter season, by all rights should have declined my desperate plea, but couldn’t say no to the kids, and came in on his day off to open the gym and cover a shift to facilitate our year end jamborees, all because he’s a heluva nice guy.

Thank you all for everything you do!!" Reposted from Bridgewater Youth Basketball FB

Historical Tidbit:

Jail prior 1800s

In the early days of Plymouth Colony, the churches made and enforced the law. Church elders or deacons passed judgement, relying on little more than the Ten Commandments when sentencing accused law breakers.

Church records talk of parishioners being brought before the church by the deacons to confess their crimes and face the punishment. The punishment often involved lashes or a fine and sometimes a commitment to attend services with reform in mind. Capital crimes were still sent to the county court in Plymouth.

As time went on and the population spread out, there was a growing need to handle law enforcement on a local level, far removed from the first church. But it was not until the American Constitution called for the separation of church and state that the state, county and community governments slowly took over the responsibilities of law enforcement.

In Bridgewater, the turning point was finally the creation of the four separate towns and the end of churches being used as the seat of town government. Each town appointed constables, but it was not until about 1900 that we hear about formal police officers.

Respectfully Submitted, David Moore

Climate Can Do:  Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices

What Is Overconsumption?

Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.

How Can We Help?

Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:

*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!

*Consider alternatives to single use items:

  •  A reusable shopping bag.
  • Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
  • Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
  • Use reusable towels instead of paper towels.

*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:

Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.

*Rather than replacing, repair.

Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.

*Join Buy Nothing.

With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. As their motto states “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app aimed at the community.

*Shop local.

By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Fire For Effect Reflects & Plans

Town Landing

"As we reflect on the past two years in Bridgewater, it is the small achievements that give us the motivation and reassurance that we are indeed making a difference. Achieving our 501(c)(3) status in 2022 marked the beginning of an exciting journey to support our veterans and first responders in a meaningful way. Our vision was to accomplish our fundraising goals while providing Bridgewater and its residents with unique amenities.

Town River Landing, located on Spring Street, has historically been a focal point for the community, largely due to the efforts of Kitty Doherty and others. A bench was installed, and a canoe launch was created. However, over the past 15 to 20 years, the property had been reclaimed by nature and had become a dumping ground for old trees and trash. Recognizing the importance of these past efforts, we sought approval to clean up the area and restore its potential.

What began with a weed whacker quickly revealed the need for more substantial resources. We organized a day of cleanup, and many of our councilors and citizens answered the call. By the end of the day, it was evident that the space held much more potential than previously thought. This realization led us to bring in heavy equipment to restore the original footprint of the property. We cleared and improved 38,000 square feet of space, replacing 8,000 square feet of crumbling asphalt with grass."

Thrive Music Fest

"Our work is ongoing, and we have ambitious plans for the future, including creating not-for-profit events for our community to enjoy. This September, we are hosting the largest music festival ever held in Bridgewater, with all proceeds supporting our mission. We invite you to support us by purchasing tickets and exploring sponsorship opportunities at www.thrivemusicfest.com , where you can view the lineup for both days.

Below are pictures of the developers working on the park improvement project. Today, they came to Town River Landing—an area that was mostly inaccessible just two years ago—and installed a sign to associate it with the rest of the parks and trails in town. This serves as a great reminder that we must continue our efforts.

We deeply appreciate your continued support and look forward to making even greater strides together."
