Selected Titles for June 2024

Welcome to our spring/summer 2024 extravaganza!

The further away I get from my Vietnam Army experiences, the more I am able to celebrate Memorial Day. My little town had us veterans put 1,000 flags out on the town common, in front of the great oak that defines much of North Reading. It made for a nice visual and backdrop for the town's celebration.

June is a big month for the Schuyler family: younger daughter Kimberly celebrated a major milestone, her 30th birthday. Big sister Stephanie sent her and her boyfriend Chaz to Portugal for a week. Here they are, pictured in front of the "Sanctuary of Bom Jesus," near Braga, the oldest city in Portugal.

And the celebrating continued to this last weekend, with a costume party with a musical performer theme. Here, the girls and I are photographed in the photo booth. The girls were Christina Aguilera and, of course, Britney Spears. I reverted back to my old standby: Donald Fagon of Steeley Dan. You might not recognize me without my "melodica," which I forgot while the photos were being shot.

This month's offerings have some surprising new arrival, including a dozen titles which we've never seen before. Also, we have a nice grouping of uncommon architectural magazines, including Western Architect and Atlantic Terra Cotta.

As always, happy browsing!

A general discussion of Kansas building limestones follows, which includes the geology, properties, and the quarrying and processing of limestone. Numerous photographs are included to show the various artistic and utilitarian aspects of Kansas building limestones. A short glossary of terms used in the industry is also included. Art Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Ancient Sculpture

J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA

[Stone]. J. Paul Getty Museum. Art Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Ancient Sculpture Papers Delivered at a Symposium Organized by the Departments of Antiquities and Antiquities Conservation and Held at the J. Paul Getty Museum April 28-30, 1988. Malibu, CA: J. Paul Getty Museum, 1990. First edition. Quarto, pp. 299, illustrated with b/w photographs. Decorated Wraps. Very Good.

These papers on ancient marble sculpture were read at a symposium held at the Getty Museum in April 1988. The symposium on marble was prompted not only by scholarly curiosity but also by frustration. The Getty's curators and conservators, like others who work on stone sculpture, are often handicapped in their efforts to date and locate a piece by the lack of firm evidence about the provenance of marble, the working techniques of ancient sculptors, and the age and nature of surface incrustations. These issues seemed important enough to justify a meeting that would bring together people from various disciplines to discuss studies in progress. The subject was not the spiritual glories of Greek sculpture but rather the more practical properties of marble itself and how these might affect our judgment of the pieces made from it. Houses and Gardens by E. L. Lutyens

Weaver, Lawrence

[Architectural History]. Weaver, Lawrence. Houses and Gardens by E. L. Lutyens. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1914. Reprint of 1913 edition. Valentine was an important figure in the history of educational psychology. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

Sir Edward Lutyens became the best known British architect of the early part of the 20th century. This book embodies the quintessence of the man and his work; the variety of style and design seen in the houses featured brings together in one volume the many strands of Lutyen's fertile mind. Complementary to the work of the architect is Lawrence Weaver's leisurely 'saunter' round the houses and gardens - an effect created by the use of many detailed and cleverly composed photographs. Stone Decay and Conservation

Amoroso, G. G. and V. Fassina

The deterioration of stone in exposed sculptures and buildings has been evident to many concerned observers throughout the centuries. Although interest in the conservation of stone has a venerable history, its emergence as a specialized craft began slowly and tentatively in the 19th century. The range of materials currently available for stone treatment is large, and growing. Some of the chemicals that have been and are employed in conservation work are toxic or carcinogenic. It is essential that the conservator be sufficiently well-informed in safety precautions to employ these materials. The scientifically oriented monographs in this book are addressed to those engaged in or preparing for work in stone conservation. (22543)   $45.00

Colonial Homes: A Collection of the Latest Designs

Craftsman Bungalow Co., Seattle, WA

[Pattern Book]. Craftsman Bungalow Co. Colonial Homes: A Collection of the Latest Designs. Seattle: Yoho & Merritt, 1920. First edition. Oblong Octavo, pp. 40, illustrated w/ b/w photographs, perspective drawings and plans. Original Wraps. Very Good.

"Colonial bungalow" was the name applied to the new type of residence that became so popular in the 1920s on the Pacific Coast. It was no different from the ordinary bungalow in the arrangement of rooms and interior detail, with the exception of a more generous use of the sun room, and a liberal use of French doors between rooms instead of colonnades and paneled arches. The elimination of ceiling beams and wood-paneled walls is also noticeable. On the exterior, the wide low porches of a traditional bungalow are replaced by small entrance porches, pergola roofed terraces, and sun rooms. These design changes worked very well for the Pacific Coast.. Over 30 designs are featured in this book. Extremely scarce; currently the only copy available anywhere. (22590)   $225.00
