No Committees and Community Meal in July

The OPS and NOW Committees are taking a break and not meeting in July. Please mark your calendar for the next community meal and OPS/NOW meetings on Wednesday, August 13, at 6 p.m.

This group is one that received a grant from Jefferson County Master Gardeners Association. All are welcome to come!

Healing the Earth
Members of the CHPC community are invited to donate to an exciting art project that will be a visible witness to our commitment to earth care and ending gun violence. The Session has agreed to contract with local blacksmith Craig Kaviar to create a six-foot iron sculpture for the front plaza. The art piece, called “Healing the Earth,” will be made of pieces of guns chopped up at Guns to Gardens Louisville safe-surrender events.
The cost of this project is $28,514, plus stand, lighting, and installation. Session has set aside $10,000, plus $548 from the Peace and Global Witness Offering, toward the art piece. The remainder of the cost will be covered by grants and donations. If you would like to donate, please make your check out to CHPC and specify in the memo line that the donation is for the sculpture. Or you can use the QR code below.
If you have a tool or other item that you would like to donate for possible use in the sculpture, please contact the church office. Please make sure the object is iron (attracts a magnet). There is now a container in the narthex to put any iron tools in.
Guns to Gardens Louisville, which grew out of a Sunday school class in our congregation, has so far received 88 unwanted guns to transform into garden tools, art, and jewelry. Craig Kaviar is a valued partner in this effort. His art piece—along with the gardens flourishing on church grounds—will symbolize to the community our commitment to healing and caring for God's creation.

Nursery Open as of July 6

Thanks be to God for willing volunteers to open our nursery. It is clean and fully stocked and available for babies and children up to age 5 who need it. Just as Jesus welcomed the children, we want all the little ones in our midst to feel loved and welcomed in our congregation.

On opening Sunday, July 6, nursery volunteers Claudia Foulkes and Soni Castleberry welcomed one child whose parents were worshiping with us. Every Sunday there will be two adults available, both of whom have passed CHPC’s required background check performed by Protect My Ministry, a vendor recommended by Mid-Kentucky Presbytery.

Nursery volunteers will be in the narthex each Sunday morning by 10:45 a.m. to greet children and their families and offer their services. If not needed at the beginning of the service, volunteers will sit at the back of the sanctuary and can be approached at any time during the service to take children to the nursery as parents and children wish.

A special thank you to Claudia Foulkes and Katherine Futrell for stepping up as Nursery Co-coordinators to schedule volunteers and ensure appropriate readiness of the nursery. Please contact them through their information in the church directory if you would like to be a part of this CHPC ministry. A big thank you also to Eva Stimson and Perry Chang who updated guidelines and forms for the operation of the nursery.

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Paul Seebeck has written an article about the prayer group for the online newsletter of the Synod of Living Waters. Read the article here: https://synodlw.org/2025/06/prayer-and-action-for-the-middle-east/

July 30 -- A First-Hand Report on the Middle East

Last month, Hunter and Ruth Farrell traveled in Israel and Palestine with a group of 15 theological educators from six countries. We can hear from them about their trip on Wednesday, July 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in Henry Young Hall. Please plan to come and invite family and friends in the community too. This gathering will be a great opportunity to hear directly from trusted friends about what they saw, heard, and learned.

It is hard to keep up with all that is happening in the Middle East. One participant in the Middle East Prayer Group suggested having a series of “Teach In” events like in the Vietnam era. The group liked the idea and is pursuing the possibility of having more monthly sessions. We all try to listen and understand but often struggle to find voices we respect. And we often want to ask questions but have no way to do so. Please come on July 30 with an open heart, concerns that you have, and information that you need to help you wrestle with and pray about what is happening in this part of God’s world.
