What to know: New PPE, jobsite toilet rules take effect July 1
New Ontario regulations to upgrade toilet and washstand facilities at construction sites and require proper-fitting work clothing should not be overly onerous to comply with says one construction lawyer but they represent a major step for female empowerment says another advocate. The revisions to the Construction Projects Regulation take effect July 1, prompting construction employers to seek legal advice and take steps to ensure compliance.
Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton announced the new standards for construction washrooms in March, requiring among other measures for sites to have at least one women’s-only washroom where the size of the site warrants it.

The Ontario government announced that apprenticeship registrations in the province increased by 24 per cent in the last year – from 21,971 to 27,319 – as more people decided to pursue careers in the skilled trades.
The province also announced that the second year of the province’s highly popular skilled trades career fairs for students will be expanding to even more cities around the province.
To help deliver the province’s infrastructure plans, including building 1.5 million homes by 2031, Ontario will need over 100,000 new skilled trades workers this decade.

Robot can now tie large rebar grids, ideal for bridge work
The application of robots and artificial intelligence are helping transform parts of the construction industry, reducing time-consuming and repetitive tasks and helping solve skill shortages. A good example is two robots from Pittsburgh-based Advanced Construction Robotics (ACR), whose new TyBOT and IronBOT autonomous robots are now in commercial use in several U.S. projects, and which hopes to enter the Canadian market.
TyBOT was released first and has been utilized at more than 40 construction projects, specifically in bridge deck work.
