ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

An Amazing Day of Remembrance and Celebration

Children and teens shared in our glorious All Saints Sunday celebration in a variety of ways. We joined the procession, carrying flowers to lay down in front of the images of the saints displayed on the altar; we gathered in front of the altar to listen to Mother Mary Ellen's uplifting all-ages sermon; and, our teens offered the Prayers of the People, which they helped to write. So much joy as we remembered those who have gone before us to light our path and encourage us on our journey!

YOUTH MEALS WITH MEANING SERVE DAY

Joy and Service Hand in Hand:

When Are We Doing This Again?!

On All Saints Sunday (Nov 01) 15 teens plus several adults gathered to share food, personal items and -- most importantly -- smiles of welcome at our Meals with Meaning serve day. We started with some conversation about why we serve (being Jesus' helping hearts and hands in the world), how serving blesses us, and how we are all beloved, chosen and called, including our guests whose gifts may be more hidden because of the daily survival challenges they face. We looked at The Beatitudes from our Gospel lesson of the day and talked about what Jesus and our guests have in common (homelessness, poverty, people's negative attitudes, etc).

Then, off to work! Gena Vallee coordinated our set up which included food (burgers, baked beans, sandwiches, desserts, water, etc) and personal care items such as rain ponchos (it was pouring most of the time!), tee shirts, and other items. Despite the weather we had a steady stream of guests, all of whom were grateful to receive the food and other items.

The best part (other than serving those in need) -- Wanting to do this again! Stay tuned!

Many, many thanks to all our teens who participated and to our parents who worked in the background to keep everything running smoothly. And, of course, to our beloved Gena and Rose Vallee who are the heart and soul of this ministry!

CONFIRMATION CLASS: LIFE IN CHRIST

(Grades 6, 7, 8 and others)

Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10am during the school year in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).

Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.

During Confirmation we explore:

-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith

-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit

-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus

-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth

WHAT DO WE DO DURING UPPER ROOM TIME?

Following our pattern of Pause, Listen, Reflect, Pray and Go,

we build on our previous themes of

What will you do with your one wild and precious life?

(based on Mary Oliver's poem The Summer Day) and

"What makes you come alive?"

(from a quote by theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman)

"Building Beloved Community"

In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we worked on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.

Theme for 2026-2027 -- "I matter. I belong. I love."

We will delve more deeply into our core identity statement:

I am a beloved child of God. (I matter.)

I am a member of the Body of Christ. (I belong.)

I have a unique calling and purpose in this world. (I love.)

As we have in the past, we continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion and harmony into our lives.

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...

On Sunday, Oct 25 we began as always with prayer/meditation time, which included a reflection by theologian Kat Armas that picks up on our theme of "I matter. I belong. I love." Here is an excerpt from the reflection:

...this gospel, cuts through the air: “There is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free ...” (from St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians 3:11). These labels—Greek, Jew, slave, free—were more than words; they were walls built around souls, barriers defining who could rise, who was condemned to serve. But with…[this] bold proclamation, the empire’s iron categories tremble. In [Jesus] Christ, even the outsider is welcomed. No longer must anyone bow to belong; this new kin-dom dismantles the lie that peace requires our silence….

The way of Jesus stands in stark contrast [to oppressive systems]. This gospel takes the empire’s most despised [ones] and remakes them, offering not only belonging but belovedness. The reach of Christ’s love goes to the most forsaken corners of the imagination and brings forth kin [those who belong to each other in loving relationship]. Here, we find a love that turns the feared into family.

In this new kin-dom, there is no lower rank…. Jew and Greek, slave and free, barbarian and Scythian all gather at the same table, each honored as they are.

From this beginning flowed a presentation by Megan Sease of PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts). Megan led us in a discussion about who our neighbors (our "kin") are and how we are called to serve them. She reminded us that no effort to better our communities is too small and that each of us can make a positive impact. We shared some stories of how we have served or can serve and then concluded with prayer (see below).

OUR CLOSING PRAYER FOR THIS SUNDAY

Jesus, we know that whether we are at school, at activities, with friends, in our communities or at home, every day we have opportunities to choose love.

Help us to remember that whatever we say and do are opportunities to invite everyone into your kin-dom.

Help us to follow you above all others, to seek peace, to be forgiving and to help create communities where everyone can feel valued, respected, welcomed and loved. Amen.

A NEW AND EXCITING OPPORTUNITY!

Civil Rights Pilgrimage

Fr. Chris Harding is exploring the possibility of leading a pilgrimage to several key sites in the American civil rights movement. Fr. Chris led a very successful trip at his former church and is excited about bringing this experience to St. Gregory's.

The pilgrimage would be open to all high school teens (9th - 12th grade) and will most likely happen in August 2027, just prior to the start of the 2027-2028 school year. Attendance at six preparation sessions (using materials from the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta) will be required for all attendees.

An informational session for parents and teens will be held on

Sunday, December 13 at 11:30am in the Youth Room.

Please contact Fr. Chris if you have questions prior to the information session.

MEET PINECONE!

Adorable Service Cat Brings Peace and Joy

Pinecone the cat takes his job very seriously.

The 3-and-a-half-year-old pet serves as a therapy cat at a Rhode Island middle school where his owner, Kayleigh Smith, works as an art teacher.

When Smith got Pinecone, she immediately noticed how calm and gentle he was, and in September 2025, she asked her school administration if she could bring him in to help alleviate stress for students.

“I ran the idea by my principal and he seemed very supportive of it,” she tells PEOPLE. “I looked into organizations that support therapy animals and how to get an animal certified as a therapy animal.”

"HIDDEN WORLDS"

EUROPEAN WILDLIFE PHOTO CONTEST

Just over 100 shots were selected from more than 26,000 entries to the 2026 European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition — but the one above took the cake.

Titled “Hidden Worlds,” the photo by Imre Potyó was named the overall winner in this year’s contest. It features dozens of lesser horseshoe bats hibernating in a tunnel against a glowing pin mold that grows out of their dark droppings (called guano). The Hungarian photographer said in a translated statement that he’s been venturing into tunnels for 13 years to document bats, but noted that “this particular composition” had never occurred to him before.

Take a look at more of the top shots, including an elephant picking flowers and two bulls peacefully grazing in a meadow.
