BOMA California President Sarahann Shapiro Reappointed to CA Commission on Disability Access

Congratulations to BOMA California President Sarahann Shapiro on her reappointment this week to the California Commission on Disability Access (CCDA). Shapiro was initially appointed to the Commission by Governor Newsom last year as our industry's representative.

The mission of CCDA is to promote disability access through dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders including the disability and business communities as well as all levels of government. CCDA was formed as a result of legislation passed in 2008 spearheaded by our industry, the disability community, the Consumer Attorneys of California, the CalChamber, and other stakeholders.

UI Benefits for Striking Workers Bill Re-Introduced

Last legislative cycle, BOMA California alongside a coalition of business groups successfully lobbied against SB 799 (Portantino; D-Burbank), a bill, which was heavily backed by organized labor that would have been disastrous for businesses large and small and would have ballooned California's already high federal unemployment insurance debt.

The measure aimed to provide Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits to individuals who left work and chose to go on strike during a labor dispute. The bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Newsom. However, the bill has been reintroduced by Senator Portantino in the form of SB 1116, like the vetoed legislation, SB 1116 aims to allow workers who have been on strike for at least two weeks to claim UI benefits. We will continue to provide updates on this proposed legislation as they become available.
