Meet the Artist: Larry Maynard

Larry Maynard has been involved in the creative arts for most of his life. While serving in the U.S. Navy, he developed his photography skills while traveling throughout Europe. After returning to Pennsylvania, he studied at the Chautauqua Art Institute under renowned artist George Gambsky. After years of working in photography, Larry began painting the landscapes and subjects he once photographed. He eventually discovered Tonalism and found his artistic voice in the style.

Inspiration:

Larry’s work is inspired by Tonalism, a landscape style that emerged in the 1880s and focuses on light, atmosphere and mood. Using soft edges and simple palettes of muted colors, he creates peaceful, atmospheric landscapes. Inspired by artists such as George Inness and James McNeill Whistler, Larry’s paintings explore the beauty of nature and its ability to create an emotional connection with the viewer.
