Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free by order of the President of the United States on June 19, 1865. The announcement came two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863.

Join us Sunday, June 16th from 5:00 – 9:00 pm for our annual “Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom” event at Green Level Municipal Park; located on 1414 Swann Road. Burlington, NC 27217
