This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
As we mark the occasion of Good Friday in 2026 with a combined service at St Paul's Episcopal Church, we look back this week on the long history of this church having combined community services with other churches.
This week's archive item is this bulletin from a combined Lenten community service held at Trinity United Church of Christ in March of 1965. The service was led by clergy from Dueber Avenue United Methodist and the People's Baptist Church, and the music was provided by Bob Morrison and the sanctuary choir of the then First Methodist church. (The handwritten notes on the bulletin are Bob's, as this was apparently the bulletin he used and saved.)
In addition to this service, the bulletin also alludes to other combined weekday services for Lent, which took place at this church. That tradition lasted for many years.
On the back of the bulletin, you can see all of the different churches (and kinds of churches) all over Canton, Stark County and maybe beyond that participated in these community services.
And this church was also once an active part of the combined community Thanksgiving service.
We continue that tradition in our time by regularly having combined community services with St Paul's Episcopal and Christ Presbyterian. (Click to open a PDF in a new window.)
