Harvest Home Sunday 2025

Sunday, November 16

Harvest time was important throughout Pennsylvania in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Harvest Home Services were a regular part of the church calendar. These services were an expression of gratitude to God after months of hard work planting and cultivating the fertile soils. Written accounts from Lutheran and Reformed congregations describe harvest services as early as the 1830's (Forrest Moyer, 2019).

We will celebrate Harvest Home Sunday on November 16 this year. Your generous food donations will be split between 3 local food banks: Jesus Focus Ministry Food Pantry at Bethanna, Bucks County Housing Group Doylestown, and New Britain Food Pantry.

Suggested foods include:

-Fresh Produce: Apples, carrots, celery, cranberries, onions, potatoes, squash, and sweet potatoes.

-Nonperishables: Boxed cornbread mix, boxed pie crust mix, cake mix/frosting, canned corn, canned green beans, canned pumpkin, canned pumpkin pie filling, canned broth, canned yams, canned cranberry sauce, gravy, boxed potato flakes, and boxed stuffing mix.

Kindly leave your food offerings on the table in the lobby.

Many thanks from the Missions Committee

Local Food Pantries Need Your Support

Bucks County Housing Group food pantries need our help. Supplies are low and need is high.

How can you help? Place food in the grocery cart located in the DUMC Lobby or the bin outside of the church. You can also donate directly via their Amazon list.

Greeters Needed

Are You Friendly?

As a welcoming church, we want people to feel that hospitality when they arrive. We are looking for friendly people to serve as greeters on Sundays before each worship service. Simply arrive 15 minutes early, stand at the main door, and welcome those who arrive for worship. Training will be provided.

Please contact Laurie Lewis.

Help Make Online Worship More Engaging at Doylestown UMC

Did you know our online worship attendance often exceeds our in-person services? Each week, people from near and far tune in to our livestreamed services, but it can be hard for them to feel truly connected without a visible, welcoming community.

Lay Leader Insights:

RESILIENCE

Brené Brown defines resilience as rising strong from failure. This involves embracing vulnerability, nurturing your spirit, and practicing self-compassion. None of us is perfect, and thus we will stumble. These times offer us opportunities to grow as we develop resilience.

The Eagles football team recently hired Dr. Brown as an emotional support coach. Developing resilience helps players move forward in strength, take care of their mental health, and stay focused. She was hired after a 24-year-old player from another team tragically took his own life.

SERVE & ENGAGE

Tent and Sleeping Bag Collection

Please consider donating tents and sleeping bags to The Synergy Project (Bucks County). Drop off is at Doylestown United Methodist Church (the 2nd coat closet in the lobby). Gift cards to supermarkets, Wawa, and gas cards, as well as anything food related would also be appreciated. Young kids are not being placed in tents and sleeping bags, but there is a waitlist at the shelter and for other things needed. Please reach out to Robert “Woody” Wood at (215) 990-3962 if you are able to help or would like to find out how else you can help. Woody is the Street Outreach Coordinator for The Synergy Project Bucks County, which is a Valley Youth House Street Outreach Program.

SNAP Benefits Assistance

If you or someone you know is on SNAP, please give them the information below. SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) have been frozen as of Saturday, November 1 due to the government shutdown. Doylestown Area FISH offers food assistance to their callers. There are about 40,000+ (6.3%) people in Bucks County who receive SNAP benefits. Given all of this, Doylestown Area FISH has pulled $10,000 from their endowment to purchase grocery gift cards to give to Bucks County residents who are in need. As of Monday, November 3, Bucks County Residents can go to the HUB (in the County Administrative building) or set up an appointment with the HELP Center (215) 949-1660 to receive cards. If individuals are unable to get to the HUB during business hours, they can call the Doylestown Area FISH at (215) 348-7172 and they will determine ways to get them assistance.

For those able to help, donations can be made through Doylestown Area FISH website, via PayPal, or mailed to Doylestown Area FISH, P.O. Box#196, Doylestown, PA 18901.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who provided food and/or helped pack this month's meal.

In only 25 minutes, 26 amazing volunteers packed 156 trays with meatloaf, mixed vegetables, and mashed potatoes. We also packed another 8 trays with food left over from a previous community meal. This totals 164 meals this month to help the food insecure.

Thank you everyone for your generosity.

We also welcome our new friend Sue Denard. Glad you could join us, and we hope to see you again in the future.

Our next meal pack will be on Wednesday, December 10 at 12:45 pm (one week early due to the holiday). We will be packing cheeseburger casserole, vegetables, and applesauce.

I look forward to seeing everyone in December.

Best,

Cindy
