The Liturgy of the Word is the first major part of the Catholic Mass, following the Introductory Rites. Within this rite, God speaks to His people through Sacred Scripture. The Assembly responds in prayer, reflection, and profession of faith.
Here are the main elements of the Liturgy of the Word:
First Reading
Usually from the Old Testament on Sundays and solemnities. During the Easter season, it is often from the Acts of the Apostles.
Responsorial Psalm
Sung or recited between readings. Helps us to meditate on God's Word.
Second Reading
Typically taken from one of the New Testament letters (Epistles) on Sundays and solemnities.
Gospel Acclamation
Usually the "Alleluia" (except during Lent). Prepares us to hear the Gospel.
Gospel
The high point of the Liturgy of the Word. Read by a deacon or priest and recounts the life, teachings, and saving work of Jesus Christ.
Homily
The priest or deacon explains the Scripture readings and applies them to Christian life.
Profession of Faith (Creed)
Usually the Nicene Creed on Sundays and solemnities. The congregation professes the faith of the Church.
Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful)
Intercessions offered for the Church, the world, those in need, and the local community.
