August 2025 Newsletter

Hi everyone and I hope your summer continues to go well! :)

I don't know about you, but this summer has been flying by for me. I find it hard to believe that autumn is right around the corner and I have started my preparation for the autumn blends. But summer isn't over yet, so be sure to grab any summer teas before they are gone. The list at the bottom of this newsletter will let you know what is still available!

As a reminder, orders are shipped on Mondays and Thursdays and deadlines are Saturdays and Tuesdays at 5:00PM EST, respectively. If the orders are not picked up by my postal carrier on either of these days, then they will ship the next day. As always, I fill and ship orders as quickly as I can. Even though there is a schedule, if I am able to fill an order that comes in past the deadline then I will!

It has been a few years, but the Jin Xuan Milk Wulong from China is finally back in stock. This has always been a top selling tea, but my supplier discontinued it several years ago and I could not find a new source for this tea. Well, I finally found one! Since I have several teas that are crafted from Jin Xuan leaf material, I figured I would highlight these teas in this month's newsletter.

Lastly, save the date - this year's Women's Expo will be on Thursday, October 9th! Be sure to support the hardworking, creative and talented women entrepreneurs who will be exhibiting at this year's event. Even though I will not be attending as an exhibitor this year, I will be there in spirit ;)

As always, I appreciate your continued support of my small business!! Enjoy the rest of your summer :)

Jin Xuan Teas

Jin Xuan is the name of a cultivar of the tea plant that was developed in Taiwan and first appeared on the market in the 1990's. There are hundreds of cultivars (short for cultivated variety) of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, which have been cultivated to maintain the characteristics inherent within the plant. Many wulongs are named after the cultivar from which they have been produced. In addition to Jin Xuan, other cultivars that may be familiar to you are Tie Guan Yin, Rou Gui, and Tie Luo Han. Other cultivars are Yakubita, which is used primarily to produce some Japanese green teas, and AV2, which is a cultivar developed and used predominantly in the Darjeeling Region of India. Along with terroir and processing, the cultivar used will also bring unique aromas and tastes to the tea.

Jin Xuan, also known as Golden Lily, is a famous cultivar used to mainly produce wulong teas; however, some black and green teas are also produced with this cultivar. It has been mainly planted in Taiwan and is used predominantly to produce lightly oxidized, rolled wulongs that have a characteristic creamy mouthfeel, aroma and taste. Because of the popularity of this style of wulong, these plants have also been cultivated in other countries, including China and Thailand. As a result of this unique creaminess, these types of wulongs are also known as milk wulongs. Beware, however, that not all milk wulongs are produced from the Jin Xuan cultivar and many of them on the market have milk flavoring added to give the tea its creamy note. The black and green teas using Jin Xuan leaf material may also exhibit this creamy note, but usually it is not as pronounced as in the wulongs.

I now offer five teas that are crafted using the Jin Xuan cultivar - three wulongs and two black teas.

  • Jin Xuan Formosa Wulong - from the Ali Shan Mountain Region in Nantou County in Central Taiwan and is grown at an elevation between 2,200 and 2,600 feet. Loosely rolled leaves are lightly oxidized about 20-25%, yielding a light-bodied infusion that is highly aromatic with floral, sweet cream, caramelized sugar, and subtle spicy notes. Of the three wulongs, this one is the most floral.
  • Jin Xuan China Wulong - from the Fujian Province in China and is grown at an elevation above 3,600 feet. Loosely rolled leaves are lightly oxidized about 20%, and receive a light roasting to enhance the creamy note. They are then steamed in milk to further bring out the creaminess. The result is a light-bodied infusion that imbues the richest and creamiest note of the three wulongs, along with a slight floral note.
  • Jin Xuan Thai Wulong - from the Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand and is grown at an elevation between 1,300 and 2,300 feet. Loosely rolled leaves are lightly oxidized about 15-20%, yielding a light-bodied infusion with creamy, floral and fresh notes. Of the three wulongs, this one is the most balanced.
  • Alishan Jin Xuan Formosa Black Tea - from Chiayi County in western Taiwan and is grown at an elevation about 3,300 feet. Large, slightly twisted leaves yield a medium-bodied infusion with sweet, stewed fruit, and woody notes.
  • Jin Xuan Organic Thai Black Tea - rare tea from the Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. After harvest, the large leaves are spread out in the shade and allowed to oxidize for about 18 hours, then rolled and oxidized for another 4-5 hours. The large leaves yield an aromatic and very smooth, medium-bodied infusion with sweet, fruity, caramel, and honey notes.

A little more information about each tea, along with pictures can be found by inputting "Jin Xuan" in the search bar in the online shop https://www.pleasuresoftea.com or by clicking here. It's amazing that even though, these teas are crafted using the same cultivar leaf material, they each have their own unique character.
