Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Last Sunday, Jesus gave us the heart of the whole law in just two commandments: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34–40). It is simple to say and hard to live, and perhaps never harder than in our current political climate.

Many of us have felt the strain. Disagreements that once stayed at the ballot box now reach the dinner table, the family group text, and friendships of many years. Too often we start to see one another first as members of a party, and only later, if at all, as brothers and sisters, neighbors, and children of God. Some of us have stopped talking about anything that matters just to keep the peace. Others find that every conversation turns into an argument.

As people of faith, how do we stay true to Christ’s command to love our neighbor, especially the neighbor we disagree with? How do we hold onto our convictions without letting go of our relationships?

I’m delighted to share that a good friend from my years in New York, Bob Bordone, has agreed to visit our parish to speak about this very question.

Bob is a nationally recognized expert in negotiation and conflict management. With Dr. Joel Salinas, a leading neurologist, he has written a new book, Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In. Drawing on both conflict resolution and brain science, they offer a hopeful approach for every part of life, from the boardroom to the kitchen table. Instead of avoiding conflict or letting it escalate, we can learn to face disagreement with courage and compassion. Handled well, conflict can become a source of growth, understanding, and even deeper connection.

Bob is the founder of the Cambridge Negotiation Institute. For many years he taught negotiation and conflict resolution at Harvard Law School, where he served as the Thaddeus R. Beal Clinical Professor of Law and founded the school’s Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program. He is also a person of deep faith: an active member of the Paulist Center Community in Boston and a member of the Advisory Board of the Catholic Common Ground Initiative.

Thanks to a generous grant, everyone who attends will receive a free copy of the book. All are welcome. Consider bringing a family member or friend, especially one who sees the world differently than you do.

May the Lord give us the grace to disagree with charity and to love one another as He has loved us.

Peace and blessings,

Father Gil
