Pre-Concert Talks

One hour before the start of many of our evening concerts, we will be hosting pre-concert talks.

On August 8 and 9, join Jon Kimura Parker and Aloysia Friedmann along with oboists Alecia Lawyer, Ann Lemke, and Mary Lynch VanderKolk for Oboe Lore – a wide-ranging discussion of this special instrument and the impact Aloysia’s mother, Laila Storch, had on the world of oboe players.

August 11 and 12 will feature John Wineglass in conversation with Aloysia and Michell Marshall, looking at his creative process in turning the Alice Walker story "The Flowers" into the new work …And The Summer Was Over. Michell will present a reading of the story.

On August 15 and 16 we will enjoy a conversation between Miró Quartet violist John Largess, Aloysia, and our other visiting composer, Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, whose piece Microfictions, Vol. 1, will have its Northwest premiere in that evening's Mystical Winds concert.

Pre-concert talks are offered free of charge and are open to all.

Children’s Concert!

Come on down to the front lawn of Orcas Center, in the shadow of the whale, at 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 9, for what promises to be a great time – our Children’s Concert! There will be accordion, oboe, and flute, plenty of strings, piano, and lots of good fun. The concert is free and open to all ages – if you can bring a kid along, all the better! No tickets required, just grab your favorite young person and come and enjoy the fun!
John Wineglass at Orcas Island Library

How does a composer take the words of a short story and turn them into an instrumental composition? Emmy-award winning composer John Wineglass will explain, with moderator Michell Marshall guiding the conversation and reading the Alice Walker story on which his new work is based. The talk will be at the Orcas Island Library at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 12.

Open Rehearsal for Seniors

What makes chamber music so special? There are many things, a major one being the interaction between the performers as they play a piece together and work out each instrument’s role, each note, all the details that make for a truly remarkable performance. Take a peek behind the scenes at our Open Rehearsal for Seniors. At 1:00pm on August 18, in the concert hall at Orcas Center, attendees are invited to enjoy a rehearsal before the evening performance of our Romantarctica program. No tickets required.
Visual art by Martha Farish, Michael Lundgren, and Susan Singleton will be woven throughout several of the concert programs.
