Addressing Hunger:

Speak Up and Care

for the Children

by Vernita Kennen - Incarnation, Shoreview

Few of the world’s children will find themselves approaching the school year or vacation as well-nourished as they have been in the past. While Minnesota provides school lunch for all, this is not the case in all of our states. A recent report from the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities says the number of children who have benefited from SNAP has fallen by 1.5 million since July 2025. As SNAP has been reduced by administrative and congressional cuts, it seems unlikely that reduced need is driving the decline in SNAP participation.…

And it is not just our U.S. children who are hungry; hunger has become a persistent humanitarian crisis with wars and armed conflicts as the primary driver today. The 2026 Global Report on Food Crises by United Nations agencies, the European Union and partners found that in 2025, 35.5 million children were acutely malnourished, including nearly 10 million suffering from severe wasting. Compounding the hunger problem, 93 million school-aged children are out of school because of war, conflict or displacement. The future does not bode well for them.…

It seems as if it is OUR responsibility to feed hungry children and provide education for future generations. In this time of budgeting (moral documents budgets certainly are), let’s remember this and urge our elected officials to remember it, too.

Safer Together: Beyond
the Gun Control Debate

Tuesday, Oct. 27 - 6:30-8:45 p.m. | Transfiguration Lutheran Church, Bloomington & Online

Minnesota and the U.S. continue to face an epidemic of violence and harm involving guns. Too often, public debates around firearms devolve into a standoff between personal rights and government control. This pattern fails to address the many ways that each of us can act to reduce gun-related violence and trauma in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities. As Lutherans, how do we respond to this ongoing reality? What does our social teaching say? How might we foster the kind of moral deliberation and call to action that can lead to meaningful change?

The Region 3 ELCA synods of Minnesota and North Dakota are offering a time of shared learning, discernment, and collective action toward solutions to the harms of gun misuse. We hope to move beyond the gun rights-gun control debate and to promote safer communities with the conviction that we are safer together. This event is for lay leaders and rostered ministers.

The presentation and conversation will be led by Dr. Jillian Pederson, professor of criminology and criminal justice at Hamline University and the executive director of The Violence Prevention Project. Dr. Pederson will reflect on her research into mass shootings as a public health concern. Following her presentation, participants will discuss the ELCA’s Social Message on Gun-Related Violence and Trauma and the unique ways their own communities are impacted by gun violence.

Congregations may wish to organize local gatherings and individuals are welcome to attend in person or online. We hope that this event can be part of a movement across our region for moral deliberation and collective action that will reduce gun violence in our communities and contribute to communal healing and the common good. Register here.

National Day of Remembrance

Wednesday, Sept. 30 - 6 p.m. | Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis

At our 2025 Synod Assembly, the Saint Paul Area Synod passed a memorial and the ELCA Churchwide Assembly subsequently resolved, for all churches to recognize the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools, on Sept. 30 of every year.

Following on its memorial in support of this movement, our synod is a Community Sponsor for this year’s Day of Remembrance, hosted by the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. A candlelight vigil on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis will honor Indian boarding school survivors and those who never returned home. It is a remembrance walk recognizing the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of those who attended boarding school. There will be remarks from guest speakers, survivors, and community leaders. Together, we honor survivors, remember those whose lives were forever changed, and reaffirm our commitment to truth, justice, and healing. Learn more.

How else can you get involved? The Truth Seeking and Truth Telling Initiative within the ELCA is a grassroots movement to account for our parent denominations’ involvement in the Indian Boarding Schools era, and to educate our congregations on this legacy. Visit the resources page.
