A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDING BISHOP CURRY : All Together in One Place: A Healthy Patriotism

Dear church,

Fannie Lou Hamer was a powerful Black woman who risked her life so that all people could exercise their right to vote. After attempting to register to vote in Mississippi in 1962, she faced violent retaliation, enduring threats, beatings and intimidation. Yet she continued to sing, testify, march and organize for equal voting rights for all people. She was not wealthy. She did not hold a high public office. Yet she exercised a profound public vocation, insisting she and her neighbors had the right to participate in civic life and to have the food, land and opportunity needed to flourish. She was a patriot who loved her country enough to challenge it to live up to its promise that every voice matters and every vote counts. By risking her own safety in the struggle for democracy, Hamer acted as a patriot, calling public leaders to serve everyone.

The airwaves are full of conflicting messages about patriotism, and many of you have written with your own questions and perspectives.

BISHOP BOS' MESSAGE ABOUT VOTING

Loving God, we thank you for the gift of good government. Give us the courage and strength to engage our government, through voting and other participation. We pray for our elected leaders. May they serve all neighbors well, may they lead with compassion and grace. We pray for safe and fair elections next week throughout our nation. We pray for peaceful transfers of power and safety for poll workers and all those who serve us in the election process. Bless our nation in these conflicted times. May our faithful voices serve as a witness of reconciliation and peace. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Beloved community,

Religion and politics. The well-worn joke suggests civilized people don’t talk about either. The United States governing documents call for a separation of church and state, which some people interpret to mean people of faith should never talk about politics. And yet, Jesus taught us we should constantly be talking about, praying about and acting on our faith in the public sphere.

Next week our nation participates in one of our most sacred trusts, a democratic election process. The Christian tradition has taught us much about living as a person of faith in society. Jesus drew a picture a picture of what the kingdom of heaven would be like and then let us know that kingdom was at hand now. Recently our gospel lesson reminded us Jesus said, “Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s, give unto God that which is God’s.” Jesus knew our lives will always include relationships with both God and government.

Newsletter Submissions

If you would like your event considered for inclusion in the Southwest California Synod weekly newsletter, please email your event information to communications@socalsynod.org. For the best opportunity to promote your event, please submit all event details three to four weeks before the event date or registration deadline.

The Synod newsletter is distributed each Thursday. To be considered for that week’s newsletter, submissions should be received by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Late submissions may be included the following week whenever possible.

Due to the number of submissions we receive, not every event can receive a full feature in the newsletter. Events may be highlighted with a graphic and description, included in our Community Events listing with a link to full details on the Synod website, or both. The timing, frequency and placement of newsletter features are determined by Synod-wide relevance, available space, event dates and registration deadlines.

When submitting an event, please include the event title, date, time, location, registration information or link (if applicable), and a brief description, and attach a flyer or graphic if available.
