Main Gallery: Dulk’s Heritage - Their surreal elements and his immense gifts for personification, Dulk’s paintings seem to possess their own magical dream, their own colors and narratives, but at the core is one message; he is asking us to wake up.

Gallery II: Charlie Immer’s Glow Up and Glow Down - A spectacular and surprisingly inviting world of candy-coloured-gross-out-flavored mayhem offers truly wondrous visual feasts for those who are unperturbed by oodles of goo, slime, blood and the occasional severed head. Encapsulating the joy of radiant exploration to make viewers smile.

Gallery III: Sentrock’s Two Birds, One Stone - A collection of paintings and drawings that reflect Sentrock’s mental perspective at this time in his career and stage in life, who he is as an artist and who he is as a person.

Gallery IV: Japanese artist Toyameg’s The Pinkish Paradise - Toyameg welcomes audiences to the pink desert she dreamt of. The artist says, “All people and animals love each other there. It was a very happy place and I thought it was paradise.” The resulting collection is heart-warming and vibrant.

Casey McGlynn, “Horse Looking Back Again,” 60 x 48”

Casey McGlynn, “I am the Horse”

June 1 - 24, 2023

Casey McGlynn’s paintings, often including collaged elements, are honest, vulnerable, and dynamic. He depicts himself and those close to him through symbols of whales, birds, elephants, and horses. Angst is balanced by humor, and canvases include written words that read like diary entries. In this collection, McGlynn acknowledges the importance of the horse, which has long been a prominent feature of his powerful visual lexicon.

“Human Rights After the Holocaust” (Core Exhibition)

Opening June 11, 2023

In 1966 New York publisher Samuel Shore commissioned Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) to create a series of artworks on the theme of the renewal of the Jewish people. “Aliyah, the Rebirth of Israel” is composed of 25 mixed media paintings including gouache, watercolors, and Indian ink on paper.

Observations of the 400-year history of the Jews of Amsterdam were created in radically different periods and by two non-Jews. The works of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) and Henk Pander (1937-2023) portray the evolving life of the Jews of Amsterdam in times of great change.

Pioneering in its global scope, Human Rights After the Holocaust calls on visitors to ponder the work needed to achieve dignity and rights for all persons. It explores why and how human rights abuses, hatred, racial injustice, and genocide continue to happen and, simultaneously, illustrates the ways that hope and action are essential to our endeavors.

Martiros Adalian, “Composed Serenity”

Jim Jenkins, "Currents"

Kyong Boon Oh, "Walk Slowly - Unknown Path"

On view through July 8, 2023

Martiros Adalian is a mixed media artist. He uses acrylic, oil, and spray paint to create a multi-dimensional and multi-textual effect that adds a sense of motion and energy to his pieces. His work is heavily inspired by Baroque and Renaissance art, as well as his “beautiful family.” Adalian likes to “capture tension in his artworks, suck the air out of the painting and make the viewer feel intrigued by the work.” He wants the viewer to be an intimate observer of his work and feel like they too are being observed. Adalian doesn’t believe that art should be a comfort. He believes it should distress, bother, and illuminate those kinds of feelings. See the full Press Release.

Jim Jenkins’ has been long fascinated with various scientists and inventors. These two interests led Jenkins to examine the connection between art and technology.

Methodically and repetitiously, Kyong Boon Oh weaves together threads of wire to create forms that are intertwined in complexity and order.

William Rhodes, “Father,” 2018, carved wood, metal,

pencil, ink on paper, paint and neon glass, 32 x 25 x 6"

William Rhodes, “Threads of Consciousness”

June 1 - July 15, 2023

Livia Stein, "Forward and Back"

Through June 24

Artists' Reception, both exhibitions:

June 3, 1-4 pm

William Rhodes Artist’s Talk:

June 17, 2 pm

Tying together imagery and text through neon, found materials, wood carving, drawing, and thread, William Rhodes' work comments on the connections created by conflict, trauma, longing, and hope carried through the generations. Altar-like constructions illuminated with neon pay homage to personal experience and family legacy while reaching deep into the history of forced immigration, enslavement, and social unrest, examining both the searing moments of brutality and powerful moments of grace that imbue our national story with layered anguish as well as meaningful occasions of courage and conscience. A series of intimate thread and graphite portraits compliment the larger neon assemblage works, evoking a reverence for the connections that link one person to another across time and experience.

Rui Sasaki, “Subtle Intimacy: Here and There”

Through June 12, 2023

Rui Sasaki, who works primarily in glass, is known for her meticulous studies of the environment around her. Her work contemplates the stories of people and places and how encounters with plants and the weather can evoke a sense of intimacy and familiarity even in a foreign place. Sasaki aims to create multi-sensory experiences through her glass art installations that invite viewers to explore their own relationship with the natural world.

This art exhibition features transparent impressions of the Garden’s foliage are forever preserved in panes of clear glass. Simultaneously scientific and ethereal, Sasaki doesn’t focus on individual works but instead combines pieces into an installation that creates an immersive experience for its viewers. The glass panels that will make up the installation in Portland Japanese Garden’s Pavilion Gallery are composed of plants both from Portland and Sasaki’s neighborhood in Kanazawa.

Agnes Pelton, “Desert Landscape,” oil on board, 4 1/2 x 6 3/4”

Agnes Pelton (1881-1961)

June, 2023

Born in Stuttgart, Germany to American parents, William Halsey Pelton and Florence Pelton, Agnes Pelton was a pioneering American modernist whose career had several phases that reflected her wide-ranging interests, extensive travels, and ability to grow and change. From 1900 to 1914, she did "imaginative paintings" focused on her 'inner self'; in 1919, a visit to the Southwest and exposure to Pueblo Indians initiated her portrait phase.

It was not until 30 plus years after her death that Pelton achieved national recognition for her painting. A 1995-1996 touring retrospective exhibition, "Agnes Pelton, Poet of Nature," made wide audiences aware of her skills and historical importance. Not only was she a groundbreaking woman in an era when men dominated the profession of fine art painting, she had painted interactively utilizing a range of realistic and abstract styles. Unlike many of her peers, she never totally abandoned her classical training but allowed "each of her skills to blossom side by side." (Michael Zakian, “Agnes Pelton: Port of Nature”, p. 23)
