Migrant Center Menstrual Hygiene Products Distribution with Yolo Food Bank
| | |
This summer, my office worked with the Yolo Food Bank to begin distributing menstrual hygiene products to Yolo County Housing's migrant centers in Davis, Madison, and Dixon. The Food Bank has been distributing food at the migrant centers for some time as part of their Cultivo program, but when my staff attended the opening day for the Davis Migrant Center earlier this year, they learned of the need for greater access to menstrual hygiene products for families at the centers from Yolo Works' Agricultural Labor Coordinator Rodrigo Lopez. Upon hearing about the need, I connected with Karen Baker, the executive director of our Yolo Food Bank to see how we could address this issue.
I am so grateful to Karen and her team for jumping into action, and last week the Food Bank distributed menstrual hygiene products as well as food during their Cultivo distribution. My team visited the Davis center to meet the food bank team during their drop-off on a day where 292 total pounds of menstrual hygiene products were split between the Davis, Madison, and Dixon Migrant Centers along with their regular delivery of fresh and canned foods.
The products are donated by several stores and pharmacies across the county, and the food is purchased by Sutter Health along with various other donors. It was a huge success, and we look forward to continuing this partnership with the Food Bank to provide menstrual hygiene products to all who need them.
| | Board of Supervisors Updates | | The Board of Supervisors with Supervisor Barajas' departing Assistant Deputy Catherine Diaz. | | The Board of Supervisors with Yolo County Probation Officers Rachelle Gayton, Ashley Atkins, Joe Rodriguez, Louie Virgen, Rudy Escalante, Lisa McLandress, Anne-Marie Bullen and Sergio Pimentel. | | The Board of Supervisors with members of the Davis Committee Against Nuclear Weapons | | |
At our second meeting in July, the Board of Supervisors presented resolutions declaring July 20-26, 2025 as Probation Services Week and August 6, 2025 as Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembrance Day and urging the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war. We also recognized the exemplary athletic feats and advocacy of former River City High School student athlete Quinn White for her performance at the State Championship for 100-meter hurdles and long jump, as well as her grace and support for a fellow athlete who is transgender and shared the second place long jump award. Finally, we recognized the incredible dedication and public service of Catherine Diaz, who left her position as Supervisor Angel Barajas' Assistant Deputy Supervisor at the end of July. It was a pleasure to work with Catherine, and I am sorry to see her leave Yolo County, but I know she will succeed in her next chapter.
In addition to resolutions and recognitions, the Board of Supervisors also received updates from county staff and community partners. We heard from the League of Women Voters of Yolo County about their efforts to work countywide following a merger of the former Davis and Woodland chapters and we also heard from the Yolo Community Foundation about their work to support nonprofits in Yolo County, including through the Yolo NEON program which was funded by the Board of Supervisors.
On the county side, we heard annual reports from the Yolo County Child Abuse Prevention Council and on the state of County Parks. We also received a presentation on the Agricultural Worker Program that Yolo County runs through the Health and Human Services Agency. This presentation allowed us to learn more about the biggest issues facing farmworkers in our community, as well as the county's effort to connect with and support these farmworkers.
The meeting had a packed agenda, and you can review all the items, or watch back videos of the reports from the meeting on the county website (linked here).

I am excited to have Adam leading our Department of Community Services and look forward to working with him when he officially joins the county in late August.
