Manitoba Surpasses 3,700 Doctors!

Manitoba has surpassed 3,700 physicians in practice, marking a major milestone in doctor recruitment!

Why it matters: The doctor shortage is a top concern for physicians, and we’re finally seeing strong recruitment to help close the doctor shortage.

Yes, but: While recruitment is up, Manitoba still struggles with physician retention. We have been at work on improving both recruitment and retention, taking your feedback to health system and government leaders.

How you can help: Retention is a team effort at every career stage, and physicians can play a role too:

  • Refer early career physicians, or residents in their final year, to our New to Practice program for individualized support.
  • Learn more about peer support, and how it can help physicians experiencing burnout and distress in the workplace.
  • Develop skills to build healthy workplace culture, by signing up for our leadership development sessions.

Youth Social Media Ban Supported

Earlier this week, we released a report about the impact of social media and excessive screen time on the health of children and youth, including perspectives from our recent physician survey.

  • Social media was ranked as one of the top risks by physicians, above substance use, injuries, and sedentary lifestyles.

  • Dr. Alon Altman, President of Doctors Manitoba, explained doctors are “worried about their brain development, their mental health and their physicality.”

  • More than 9 in 10 physicians support restricting social media and AI chatbots for children and youth.

đź“° In the news: Check out our coverage in the Free Press, CBC, Canadian Press and Brandon Sun.

HEALTH SYSTEM UPDATES

Ebola and Hantavirus Protocols in Manitoba

Though risk to Manitobans remains low, Public Health is providing new guidance to health care providers about two current international outbreaks.

Ebola

Health care providers should suspect Ebola in individuals with:

  • A travel history to an Ebola disease affected area within 21 days of symptom onset (currently the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda) AND
  • A new-onset fever ≥ 38.0 degrees Celsius, or other new, Ebola-compatible symptoms.

Hantavirus

Promptly contact a Medical Officer of Health (MOH) at 204-788-8666 for further guidance if you identify an individual with suspected Andes hantavirus infection with:

  • Clinical symptoms consistent with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, AND
  • A potential epidemiologic link to the Andes virus outbreak through recent travel or exposure to rodents in South America.

Read the memo to health care providers.

Exception Drug Status Updates

This month’s Manitoba Drug Benefits and Manitoba Drug Interchangeability Formulary Amendments Bulletin is out and includes updates on:

  • Exception Drug Status Additions
  • New Interchangeable Categories & Products
  • Discontinued Products

New HIV Resource

The Manitoba HIV Program has released a new infographic aiming to help physicians and other health care providers diagnose and treat HIV.

  • As we reported this month, Manitoba has declared a public health emergency in response to a sharp rise in HIV cases with rates now among the highest in Canada.
  • The increase reflects broader challenges tied to substance use, housing instability, mental health, and inequitable access to care.
