Dear Families,
During the December 22nd through December 30th winter break from school, we are grateful to everyone for helping to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families.
We appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra time off during the winter break. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. Calling in to report an absence for a vacation is appreciated and lets us know that your student is safe and that you are aware of the absence. Unfortunately, it still counts towards our Chronic Absenteeism percentage. “Chronic Absence” means absences that total 10% or more of school days with and without valid cause, as defined in Section 26-2a of the School Code. Last year our Chronic Absenteeism percentage was 23%. By working together, we can lower it.
Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as to connect to their peers and teachers.
We thank:
- Our students and their families who do their best to show up daily even when it isn’t easy.
- Our staff who go above and beyond to make school a welcoming and safe place for all students to learn.
- Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.
We appreciate each one of you. May these days off be restful and healing.
If your family or your student needs support, please reach out to their dean, social worker, or counselor for help.
Sincerely,
Dr. Robin Vannoy
Director of Deans, Hinsdale South

Please visit http://bit.ly/3g8xyNK for information about how and when we will communicate weather-related updates. There are also details about the Emergency Weather Learning (E-learning) Days we will implement if we need to close our schools.
Please consider encouraging your students to bring their laptops and chargers home daily as a part of their routine in case of inclement weather.

Attendance
Have questions about attendance? Need to complete a pre-arranged absence form?
You must report all absences, including late arrivals and early dismissals. Failure to report an absence within 24 hours of its occurrence will result in an unexcused absence. Any student who needs to leave school unexpectedly must be excused from the dean's office before they exit the building.

PSAT/NMSQT scores released
The College Board will begin releasing scores from the October 12 PSAT December 5-6. Students can log in to their College Board accounts to access their scores.
Graphing Calculators
Please make sure your student has a graphing calculator. These calculators can be used in math class, science class, and on portions of the SAT and ACT. They also have a variety of graphical and statistical features that help students investigate in class.
Students learn how to use graphing calculators through class instruction and continued practice. It is particularly important for them to know the features of their calculator if they plan to utilize it on their standardized tests.
AMC Results
Students from Hinsdale South earned the top three scores on the examinations that were administered in conjunction with the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) for individuals in grades 10 and below and 12 and below. Eli Carder, Adolph Galinski and Rishikesh Joshi took the top spots on the AMC 10 A test, while Anastasia Galinski, Henry Joyce and Eva Maria Louis took the top spots on the AMC 12 A test.
The competitions, which are organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), provide an opportunity for high school students to "develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers." You can learn more about them by visiting https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-1012.
Congrats Hornet Mathematicians!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Transformative Social and Emotional Learning is alive and well at Hinsdale South. Just a reminder: social and emotional skills are teachable and tangible. Multiple decades of data show that SEL skills can be LEARNED, and that they are truly the X-factor skills that help people to be successful across all areas of their lives.
Here at South, and in District 86, we use the CASEL framework (CASEL.org), and we teach the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence RULER tools. Ruler stands for Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate. We’d like to share a video with a brief description of how to use the MOOD METER at home! We first use the Mood Meter as a self-awareness tool (recognize). Watch this short video and see if you can use the color language (red, yellow, green, or blue) to express your mood, nonjudgmentally, at home with your student. See if they can also use the colors to communicate their mood while at home.
Remember, emotions are invitations for connection and information to help us be our best selves. Emotions/Feelings are not good or bad. They are just high energy, low energy, high pleasantness, or low pleasantness.
Your students are practicing SEL skills in their classes on a daily basis, and receive direct instruction on SEL skills in their PE and Health classes. Students also experience all-school SEL lessons monthly in our #SouthPride lessons. Shout out to our #SouthPride Student Voice Committee members who use data and their pulse on the study body to decide what SEL skills to cover in these lessons.

Athletic Highlights from the Week of November 21st
Boys Varsity Basketball
The Hornets played an extremely competitive game on Tuesday night vs the 6th ranked Curie Condors, but ultimately the size differential ran its course with the hornets losing 71-58. Hinsdale South was actually leading the contest in the first half and handled the Curie big men well overall. Jack Weigus had 18 in the contest and Ayden Farrare had 16 to lead the hornets in scoring.
The Hornets lost Wednesday night to the hosting Riverside-Brookfield bulldogs 67-34 in a game where the Hornets couldn’t get much going offensively. A bright spot in the loss was the Hinsdale South defense allowing only 8 points to one of the best big men in the state- especially given the fact he was guarded by Chris Bolte, a freshman for the hornets. Jack Weigus led the Hinsdale South scoring with 12 and Ayden Farrare chipped in 6.
The Hornets won their first game of the season Friday over University High 71-59. The Hornets led wire to wire in this one behind some solid defense and strong scoring by sophomore Jack Weigus (27 pts) and freshman Chris Bolte (15 pts). Sophomore Ayden Farrare also chipped in 13. The hornets are 1-2 so far this season with a game coming up next against Zion Benton.
The Hinsdale south hornets defeated the Zion-Benton ZBs 69-48 on Saturday to finish off their thanksgiving tournament. Ayden Farrare led all scorers in this one with 19, while Jack Weigus backed him up with 18. Anthony Lavorato also chipped in with a season high 7 pts for him. After a slow start in the first half, the hornets blew the doors off the third quarter and never really looked back. Hinsdale South is now 2-2.
Boys Varsity Bowling
On Monday, the Hornets hosted Morton. The varsity won 2910-2790. Gianluca DiNardi and Rudy Flores led the team with a 608 series. Joey McDavid shot a 246 for high game.
Girls Varsity Basketball
The Varsity Lady Hornets came away with a victory over St. Francis 38-27 on Monday night. With the win the Lady Hornets were the Consolation Champions of the Brenda Whitesell Tournament. It was a great team win with great defense and energy. Freshmen Maeve Savage and Hailey Goins both led the way with 10 points and 9 points respectively. While Juniors Mia Lavorato and Mimi Flowers each chipped in 6 points.
The Hornets then faced a good Plainfield North team on Friday. They fell short losing 24-57. Freshman Maeve Savage and Junior Mia Lavorato each led the way with 7 points. The Hornets open up Conference play at home on Tuesday against Willowbrook.
Girls Varsity Gymnastics
The Hornets started the first meet of the season with a score 128.80! Congrats to Mickey, Madi, Maeve, Katie, Casey, and Anya on the fourth place team finish at the Hornet Invite!
Anya Patel and Casey Fundator came home with a few medals as well! Anya: Vault 2nd, Bars 6th, Beam 8th, Floor 4th, and All Around 3rd. Casey: Beam 1st & All Around 7th.

Annual Hinsdale South Toy Drive
November 15-December 6
Donations will go to Joey’s Afterglow. Joey Ventimiglia was a seven-year old Darien student who lost his fight with cancer. His sister Maddy Ventimiglia is a current sophomore at Hinsdale South.
We are hoping to make this our biggest toy drive EVER! Last year, we filled four giant bins with toys, which helped Joey’s Toy Drive collect two truckloads of donations! This year, the toys will be donated to the WGN Toy Drive, the Off the Street Program and Help Heroes of Ukraine (Chicago based).
