Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
I announced the implementation of a pothole emergency plan this week that will run six weeks and fill 50,000 potholes. We have posted a preliminary map showing the work at this link .

The city is being divided into four zones and we will tackle this crisis systematically and efficiently. A large contingent of city employees will be methodically moving through streets to fill all potholes in an efficient manner, rather than crisscrossing the city based on complaints. The number of daily pothole crews will be more than tripled from four to 13. Public Service employees will be pulled away from all other duties – except demolition, alley maintenance, and the mill and fill road resurfacing program – to fill potholes during the next six weeks. Employees in the city’s Department of Public Utilities will be redeployed to pothole duty during the six-week period.

I want to thank the Lucas County Engineers Office, which has agreed to provide two crews to the city for two weeks under a partnership to help fill potholes. This is the number one priority for the city right now.

City crews have been working hard. They have already filled more than 26,700 potholes since Jan. 1, 2019.

Cities across the state have struggled to fix roads for years because of major reductions in state allocations. During the past 10 years, the city of Toledo has lost nearly $100 million from the state of Ohio.

Finally this week, for all of you who are mothers, I want to take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy Mother’s Day. I hope your children make it very special for you. I know I cannot thank my own mother and wife enough. Happy Mother's Day Mom and Sarah!
Economic Development
General Motors announced this week that it will create more than 450 manufacturing jobs in three Ohio cities, including Toledo, where the Powertrain Plant will expand production of its all-new 10-speed automatic transmission for trucks and SUVs

"This means more good, high-paying jobs for Toledo," Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said. "We are excited General Motors has decided to invest further in Toledo and I want to thank GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra for this expansion, which will help our community continue to flourish. The Powertrain Plant opened in 1957 and has received more than $1 billion in investment since 2011. It consistently receives awards and recognitions for productivity and environmental excellence, and has a long-standing reputation of quality. This investment will continue that tradition.”

GM also announced the DMAX plant in Moraine, Ohio is expanding diesel engine production for GM’s all-new heavy-duty pickups, which go on sale later this year, and the Parma Metal Center will expand production of stamped parts and deploy laser cell welding technology.
