A formal wedding or marriage ceremony is not part of the Cabécars' tradition and culture. When a couple decides to start a family they move in together, without vows or regard for ritual and formality. When I ask, “Why?” the usual answer is, “Marriage is a custom of "los blancos" (the whites). We Cabécars don’t have that custom.” If I press, they will say, “Show me in the Bible where God commands us to get married the way you say.”
I know what you’re thinking; it should be obvious. But you’ve got to remember. Judeo-Christian influence has shaped Western Civilization, our culture, and traditions for thousands of years. That’s all foreign to an indigenous tribe that hasn’t been "Christianized."
Exciting News-God Is Changing The Cabécar Nation
As a result of making disciples and Paloma Blanca discipleship teaching regarding our Covenant Keeping God, His marriage covenant, and order for the family, a miracle is taking place and changing the Cabécar Nation. Discipleship Couples are requesting that we formalize their union in Bible based Christian marriage. In most cases, these are couples who have already been together several years. In addition, many refrain from getting baptized because they feel condemned, doubting their standing with God because of their tradition. It’s a dilemma for them.
Multiple Weddings and Baptisms Coming
We plan to have our first group Weddings - Baptisms the last week in October. It will be a landmark event in Cabécar church history.
