DAVIDSON, NC – The Town of Davidson learned today that beginning Monday, August 3, 2026, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will install temporary 3-way stop signs at the intersections of Potts Street/Catawba Avenue and South Main Street/Catawba Avenue as part of an effort to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians due to increased traffic volume as a result of the Town of Cornelius NC 115/Potts Street Roundabout Project.

This move comes after a comprehensive traffic study conducted in consultation with an independent traffic engineering firm, which determined that three-way stop signs at both intersections are warranted to enhance overall safety for vehicles and pedestrians. While the study identified an expected increase in vehicle queue times, particularly along Potts Street, the anticipated safety benefits were the primary factor for the Town in supporting the recommendation. Because these intersections are part of the North Carolina state highway system, all traffic control modifications require approval from and installation by NCDOT.

During the initial implementation period, the Davidson Police Department will maintain an increased presence in the area to help ensure compliance with the new traffic patterns and to promote safe driving behaviors. Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution, obey all posted signs and pavement markings, and allow additional travel time as drivers adjust to the new intersection controls.

These temporary traffic measures will be evaluated in conjunction with NCDOT; however, we anticipate returning to the normal traffic patterns at the completion of construction.

The Town of Davidson appreciates the community's patience and cooperation as these safety improvements are implemented.
