Certificates of Appreciation from VFW

On Monday, June 26th, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6258 awarded several Halifax residents with certificates of appreciation for their contribution and dedication to the town of Halifax! Awards were given to Mr. Edgar Bent, Mrs. Kathy Garland, and Capt. Jeff Cuozzo of the Halifax Fire Department.

Mr. Bent is a longtime Halifax resident and has been involved in numerous community programs over the years. Mrs. Garland is the Halifax Highway Department Admin and a resident of Halifax who has contributed to beautifying our town, such as planting and maintaining flowers at military monuments.

Capt. Jeff Cuozzo not only received a certificate of appreciation but was also awarded the Firefighter of the Year honor by the VFW at the state level a few weeks ago! Capt. Cuozzo received both awards in recognition of his faithfulness, selflessness, and courage as a first responder.

Congratulations to all three recipients and thank you for all you do for the town of Halifax!

Historical Tidbit:
Farmer's Garage
Many times I have read or heard about the building that was attached to the blacksmith shop as being the first garage in town. It never was a garage in the sense of being an automobile repair shop. It was, as the name suggests, a farmer's garage and all repairs that were made there were on wagons and farm equipment." Uncle Charlie" (Frye), who was Ella Baker's uncle, was an expert wood worker and for years ran that shop all by himself. (Ella Baker was the blacksmith, Jared Baker's wife.) "Uncle Charlie" came to Halifax to stay with his niece and her family for a visit and ended up spending years there.

Charlie & Ella shared the Farmer's Garage as their working area repairing the farm equipment, wagons and Ella's blacksmith work. Farmers could also get gas for cars, trucks and tractors or have items repaired in the forge. The garage had a hand crank gasoline pump out front.

Climate Can-Do: Hydration in the Heat and Refillable Water Bottles

Summer is finally here! Warmer weather, more time outside, and an increase in physical activity…all of which lead to us being thirstier. Drinking enough water throughout the day is always important – our bodies are 50% to 70% water (Mayo Clinic) – and with the hot weather in the coming months, it is especially crucial to avoid dehydration. However, our hydration doesn’t need to come at the expense of our environment. According to Ban the Bottle, Americans throw away 35 billion plastic bottles every year. Additionally, only 5% of our plastics (Greenpeace) get recycled; the rest end up in trash heaps, or are litter and many end up in the ocean.

Refillable water bottles make a real difference close to home; in our drinking water; in our rivers; and right down to the ocean. By switching to refillables instead of buying single-use bottles, you are: cutting down on oil usage needed to manufacture the plastic water bottles; decreasing CO2 put out into the atmosphere through production; reducing landfill waste (University of Colorado Boulder); and decreasing the likelihood of nanoplastics in our tap. You’re also saving money and time by not buying a plastic water bottle every time you’re out and about -$1.25 may not seem like much, but it definitely adds up! If tap water isn’t for you, a filtered water dispenser and a reusable water bottle will soon pay for themselves as you consider the cost of bottled water. Most importantly: Refillable water bottles can decrease pollution in our oceans – the same ones we love to swim in over the summer. It’s an important Climate Can Do to reduce personal plastic waste; opt for refillable bottles instead of single-use plastic ones so we and our environment can flourish!

The Halifax Beautification Committee, Working Hard

In the span of two months between April 22nd (Earth Day) and June 22nd, the Halifax Beautification Committee has filled another 5-gallon bucket with cigarette litter found within 1 1/4 miles of Oak Street and Princeton Street. The small bucket in the image on the left holds cigarette waste collected on June 22nd only. The Halifax Beautification Committee works hard to not only improve the landscape of Halifax, but to make our environment a better place in any way they can.
