Boca Raton Introduces School Zone Speed Detection Systems
The City of Boca Raton is implementing school zone speed detection systems as part of its Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries. The goal of this initiative is to enforce speed limits in school zones using advanced technology, ensuring safe environments for children and pedestrians.
The speed detection systems will issue citations to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by 10 mph during active school hours, limiting enforcement to times when students are most likely to be present. This targeted approach reflects the city of Boca Raton’s commitment to improving safety.
The rollout will follow a phased approach to maximize effectiveness. Phase 1 will introduce the systems at six schools: Addison Mizner School, Blue Lake Elementary School, Calusa Elementary School, Omni Middle School and Spanish River High School (combined zone), Boca Raton High School, and J.C. Mitchell Elementary School. Each location has been selected based multiple factors, including on traffic data, to ensure the installations address the most pressing safety needs.
To support this initiative, the city has planned several upcoming activities, including the identification of additional safety strategies and projects, stakeholder and community workshops, and the development of a comprehensive Safety Action Plan. Demonstration projects will also be conducted to evaluate and refine the program.
