A Note From Our Principal
As the school year draws to a close, I’ve spent some time reflecting on the past three years. It has been a privilege to serve as your principal, and I am continually inspired by the spirit and dedication of our students, staff, and families. This year, in particular, has been a testament to our collective commitment to excellence and growth.
This year we have seen significant academic achievements, with school-wide increases in both math and reading across all grade levels. This success is a direct result of the hard work of our students and the innovative approaches of our dedicated teachers. Beyond academics, we have also deepened our commitment to fostering a truly inclusive and vibrant school community. Through various celebrations and acknowledgments, we have proudly embraced and showcased the rich diversity that makes Gillespie Middle School so special.
It's also been wonderful to witness increases in student involvement. More students than ever are participating in our diverse range of clubs, thanks to our partnership with MSCR. This increased engagement enriches our school culture and provides invaluable opportunities for students to explore their interests and develop new skills. None of these accomplishments would be possible without our truly dedicated staff, whose unwavering commitment to the success of every student is evident each and every day.
As we look ahead to the next school year, we are filled with excitement for even more opportunities for growth. Gillespie Middle School is projected to grow by over 100 students! To accommodate this exciting expansion and provide enhanced learning spaces, we will be undertaking a renovation of our girls' locker room this summer, transforming it into a brand new tech lab. Our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program also continues to flourish, growing to represent over 40% of our student population – a testament to our commitment to global readiness and linguistic proficiency.
I continue to deeply appreciate the invaluable partnership we share with our families. Your engagement and support are, without a doubt, the cornerstone of our students' success. Working together, I am confident that we will continue to build upon our achievements and make Gillespie Middle School the strongest middle school in the MMSD.

Para dar cabida a esta emocionante expansión y ofrecer mejores espacios de aprendizaje, este verano renovaremos el vestuario de nuestras niñas, transformándolo en un nuevo laboratorio de tecnología. Looking ahead to next year, we have some exciting news to share regarding school-to-home communication. Next school year, we will transition to a new communication platform called ParentSquare. This will be a one-stop shop for all school announcements, alerts, teacher messages, calendars, newsletters, and more.

May 28 was the Westside track meet that included 6 middle schools (Toki, Spring Harbor, Cherokee, Hamilton, Wright, and Gillespie). 12 out of 21 of our students qualified to go to the All-city track meet next Wednesday (June 4). I am very proud of how our students represented Gillespie Middle School and competed.

El miércoles pasado (28 de mayo) se celebró la competencia de atletismo del lado oeste (Westside), en la que participaron 6 escuelas intermedias/secundarias (Toki, Spring Harbor, Cherokee, Hamilton, Wright y Gillespie). Doce de nuestros 21 estudiantes clasificaron para la competencia de atletismo de toda la ciudad el próximo miércoles (4 de junio). Black Girl Magic Conference 2025: “Dream, Lead Shine”
This year, Gillespie MS took 15 girls across all grades to the Annual Black Girl Magic Conference, where they learned about healthy hair and skin care practices and products,
new hair braiding techniques, created treasure boxes, and affirmed themselves and each other. The day was spent building and strengthening relationships based on shared
experiences and sisterhood! The Grizzly Girl Dancers also performed for the Conference Talent show this year and were a big hit! It was a great time, and we can’t wait to participate again next year.

Conferencia de (Black Girl Magic) 2025: “Sueña, Lidera y Brilla”
Este año, la Escuela Intermedia/Secundaria Gillespie llevó a 15 chicas de todos los grados a la Conferencia Anual de (Black Girl Magic), donde aprendieron sobre prácticas y productos para el cuidado del cabello y la piel, nuevas técnicas de trenzado, crearon cofres de tesoros, se reafirmaron mutuamente y se reconocieron a sí mismas. ¡Pasaron el día construyendo y fortaleciendo relaciones basadas en experiencias compartidas y hermandad! Las Bailarinas Grizzly también se presentaron en el Concurso de Talentos de la Conferencia este año y ¡fueron todo un éxito! Lo pasamos genial, y estamos deseando volver a participar el año que viene.

MMSD is offering free band lessons over the summer for any current band students. This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to receive some one-on-one or small group instruction on how to better play their instrument. The lessons will take place at Memorial High School and students will be responsible for getting themselves to and from the lesson, but there is no cost for the lessons.
Here is the link to register. Registration is due by June 9th. The lessons are usually taught in the morning and the lessons teacher will work with families to find a schedule that works for everyone. If your band student is already enrolled in summer school, they will automatically be enrolled in summer lessons and you do not need to fill out this form.

Final Days of School 6/9-6/11 - Here’s What’s Happening!
Monday, June 9
All students will have some last-minute fun within our Gillespie Community! See the information about field day below.
Tuesday, June 10
8th grade field trip to Mount Olympus Waterpark in Wisconsin Dells. Students must arrive at school by 9 am; the bus returns at 4:15 pm.
Wednesday June 11
6th grade field to Sheehan Park in Sun Prairie for sports and sack lunch in the morning. Prairie Athletic Club in the afternoon for zipline, rock wall, and pool.
7th grade will be taking the Bus Rapid Transit to Vilas Park. We have a shelter reserved as a home base. Students choose one AM and one PM activity to participate in from the following: bike ride, canoeing, fishing, nature art, nature walk, sports, swimming, or zoo. Lunch will be on the grill, and families will contribute potluck style via a sign-up genius sent by Ms. Vosen.
8th grade Promotion potluck breakfast and ceremony. Breakfast begins at 9:30 am at Gillespie. The ceremony will be at 10:15 am at Memorial High School gym. Cake reception at Gillespie will conclude the day.

On Monday, June 9th, Gillespie will host a Field Day of activities. We would like to invite families to help in two parts of the day.
We will begin the day with an all-school breakfast. If you would like to volunteer to bring in some food for the breakfast, sign up on this Sign Up Genius. We are looking for things like bagels, donuts, and granola bars. If you would like to bring in food, we would like it to be here on Friday, June 6th so we know what food we have and are able to set it up on Monday! We will, of course, accept food on Tuesday morning as well.
We will also be having a Grizzlies Go Run/Walk from 10:00-11:30. It will be an approximately two-mile run/walk for students and staff. If you would like to be on the sidelines encouraging students, here is the route the students will take! We would like to see signs, music, and/or cheering students on. If you are available during that time, we would love to see you there!
In addition to the run/walk, we will have a Big Games activity. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Metro Summer Youth Passes
MMSD and Metro are partnering again to help students in grades 6 through 12 access the Metro Bus for free during the summer.
This year, students who already have a metro bus pass can continue to use this same pass during the summer, with no extra steps needed.
New for 2025, if a student doesn't already have an existing pass, the Summer Youth Pass will be available virtually through the Metro Transit Fast Fare mobile app, making it easier than ever for students to ride with just a scan from their phone. To get started, students can email mymetrobus@cityofmadison.com from their school email address (ending in @madison.k12.wi.us) with the subject line: Summer Youth Pass.
If a physical pass is required, they will be available at their Feeder HS during summer school.
