This past week was crazy in the best way. More than twenty people crisscrossed Taichung visiting five different university campuses. We had a few funny mishaps with Uber drivers, but overall it was a really smooth week.
Our mission teams from FBC Tulsa and Hope Fellowship in Maple Valley, WA were amazing. They came well-prepared and hit the ground running.
Over the course of the week, we met face-to-face with around 500 university students — many of whom had never had a personal conversation with a native English speaker, and more importantly, with a Christian.
We invited all of them to our Gospel Party on Friday night, and about 100 students from all five universities showed up. We played games, ate a lot of pizza, and then Alexa and I shared a short talk. I didn’t warn her ahead of time, but when we finished, I turned to her and asked her to share her story of coming to Christ. She did — and it was powerful. I really believe God used it to speak to the hearts of many students in the room.
Please pray for these students — and for the others we now have contact information for. We’ve invited them to join an Alpha Class, and we’ll keep reaching out and trusting God to work in their lives.
Let me share one personal story from the week.
On Wednesday at lunch, I sat down with a young man named Lee. He grew up in a Taoist family, but when I asked about his personal faith, he said, “I believe in myself.”
I paused and asked, “How’s that going for you?”
He thought for a moment and said quietly, “Not very well, actually.”
I asked if he knew why. He couldn’t really explain, so I asked if I could share why I think believing in ourselves never fully works. He nodded.
We talked about how all of us want to be someone truly good — someone we can be proud of — but no matter how hard we try, we never quite get there. He agreed completely.
Then I asked if he’d ever had anyone explain what the Bible teaches. He said he’d heard of it but had never had anyone actually tell him what it says.
I had the incredible privilege of sharing the story — from God’s creation of the world, to our rebellion against Him, and His relentless pursuit to restore us through Jesus Christ. I explained that Jesus lived the life we could only hope to live — perfect in thought, word, and deed — so He could be the perfect substitute for us all. And in the most surprising act of goodness, Jesus takes our failures and exchanges them for his perfection.
Lee had never heard anything like it and it was a lot for him to take in.
Please pray for Lee — and for the many other students who heard or experienced their first taste of the goodness of the Gospel this week. Pray that they won’t be able to get that taste out of their hearts and minds. If you are wondering if you could come and do something like this, you can! This week we had team members from 18 - 78 years old. Contact me if you want to talk about bringing a team to Taiwan.
Throughout the week, I shared updates through our SMS Prayer List - I'm so thankful for your prayers, they absolutely made a difference. You too can join, text the word "TAIWAN" to 844-974-4171
