Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Hipp

For those of us in the U.S., this week we gathered with loved ones, indulged in delicious feasts, and hopefully had time to reflect, give thanks, and be mindful during our Thanksgiving holiday. Here at NETS, we're grateful for our dedicated Board members and all of you as road safety professionals for the commitment you bring every day to saving lives on the world’s roadways. While we can be lazy these next few days sleeping off our turkey coma, this seems like a good time to remember we can never be lax when it comes to safe driving, and we should remind ourselves and our drivers about some of the basics of fleet safety.

**Speeding:** While the excitement of the holiday season might make you want to hurry, remember that speeding significantly increases the risk of crashes. Adhere to all speed limits and road signs. A few minutes saved is never worth the potential cost.

**Impaired Driving:** Whether it's after a festive meal or a gathering with friends, impaired driving is a serious risk. Alcohol, drugs, and even some over-the-counter medications can impair your ability to drive safely. Always have a designated driver, use ride-sharing services, or stay put until you are completely sober.

**Fatigued Driving:** The hustle and bustle of the holidays can be exhausting. Fatigue impacts your reaction time and decision-making skills. Ensure you are well-rested before starting your journey, and take breaks to avoid drowsiness. Remember, it's always better to arrive a little later than not at all.

By being mindful of these crucial safety tips, you help keep not just yourself, but everyone on the road, safe. Enjoy your celebrations this holiday season, and let's make it a safe and joyous one for all.

With thanks and gratitude, and a reminder to always drive safe.

Gearing up for NETS Annual Benchmark!

One of the benefits of NETS' membership is participation in the annual benchmark process and access to the final report. The report will show how your company compares in terms of crash, injury and fatality frequencies, taking into consideration road safety policies, driver training programs, crash review practices, the “greening” of fleets, and more. The program is for all types of companies and organizations—large or small, local or global, public or private. The report will identify best practices to put in place a cost-effective, integrated, and comprehensive plan to improve your road safety performance.

To prepare for participation, NETS members should gather the following data, broken down by country:

  • Total # of vehicles by vehicle type
  • Total distance driven (in miles or kilometers) by vehicle type
  • Total # of crashes by vehicle type
  • Total # of injuries for U.S. and all other countries combined

Benchmark orientations will begin in late February and continue through March, data collection will begin soon after.

REMINDER!
