OCTOBER 2026

Hello, organizing clients and friends!

I’ve been reflecting on how our environments can help us protect our peace. I myself am supersensitive to my surroundings. Besides maintaining clutter-free spaces, here are small adjustments I’ve made in my own home to minimize overstimulation and maximize my peace:

  • No loud doorbell. A knock is less startling. I also have a 'no soliciting, please' sign on the door.

  • No rings or beeps or buzzes. I’ve set my phone so that a small group of family and friends can reach me 24/7, but otherwise my phone is always set on silent. I respond to everything else at times of my choosing rather than being constantly available and interruptible.

  • No harsh overhead lights. I prefer floor and table lamps for warm, cozy lighting.

  • No mirrors except in the bathroom. When I’m home, I want to keep my focus on my internal life versus be distracted by how I appear to others.

  • No clocks except in my office. I set alarms on my phone so that I’m on time for commitments, but once I’m done for the day, I literally go off the clock. This helps me to tune in to my body’s rhythms of resting when I’m weary, eating when I’m hungry, and sleeping when I’m tired.

  • No television screens. I love good TV (The Pitt! Ride or Die! The Great British Baking Show!) but I watch on my laptop with headphones. This helps me avoid overwhelm, plus I can hear dialogue more clearly.

  • No visible marketing materials. If I have a bottle of Dawn soap by the sink, every time I walk by, my brain will register Dawn! Dawn! Dawn! Instead, I decant liquids into plain plastic squeeze bottles. This way, my focus goes to my beautiful surroundings and not to Tough On Grease!

  • This is also why, when I’m working in your homes, I ask if I can snip off the DANGER! DO NOT SUBMERGE! tags from the cords on your small appliances. Otherwise, at a subtle level, every time you walk by your lamp or use your hairdryer, your brain absorbs DANGER!

It’s a chaotic world out there, but our homes can be relaxing, comfortable refuges. I hope these reflections inspire you to protect your own peace!
