B.C. Government Creates COVID-19 Temporary Layoff Period
Some good news from the province today for small businesses that were concerned about the 13-week layoff provisions in the Employment Standards Act. The province has relaxed the rules somewhat for employers who've had to reduce their workforce due to COVID-19 announcing that the temporary layoff period under the ESA has been extended from 13 to 16 weeks. Previously, the classification would have changed from temporary layoff to "permanent layoff" at the 13 week mark, which would have required employers to provide written working notice of termination and/or severance pay. Now it's been extended to 16 weeks.

Interior Savings Pledges $150,000 to Help Non-Profits through Pandemic
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to create financial, social and emotional challenges in our communities, Interior Savings Credit Union, a proud President’s Circle Member of the Kelowna Chamber has stepped up its support for non-profits. Many of the non-profits are being called upon to fill an increased need for food and basic essentials; to spend more on cleaning supplies and to invest in new technology to serve their clients.
In response to this urgent need, Interior Savings is pledging $150,000 to help non-profits adapt their operations to continue providing essential services. This support will be delivered through a number of measures, the most significant of which is a $100,000 Community Relief Fund.

BC in decent shape, according to economist
BC has a chance to emerge financially better from the COVID-19 pandemic than every other Canadian province, according to one of the country’s leading economists.
Douglas Porter, BMO’s chief economist and managing director, said that the province has a variety of factors going for it when it comes to dealing with the worst economic disaster to hit the planet in the last century.
Porter sees the province ending up in the middle of the pack when it comes to the pandemic’s negative economic impact; he projects BC’s gross domestic product to drop by 5.5% in 2020. The provinces that are getting the double whammy of the pandemic and oil woes—Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador—will be hardest hit, according to Porter.

Keeping Essential Workers and Goods Moving by Air Today and Tomorrow
|
|
The effects of COVID-19 are being felt around the world in all industries, and airports are no exception. With commercial flights slashed by 90 percent or more, and some airlines temporarily halting all service, at first it may appear that airports have become redundant. In fact, the opposite is true.
Although airports are serving only a small fraction of their usual numbers of customers, they are perhaps even more important than ever, supporting the delivery of essential services, personnel and supplies to communities across the country.
