NATIONAL APPLE DAY
National Apple Day falls on October 21 on the National Day Calendar as a day to celebrate all things apple! This food holiday is dedicated to promoting the rich cultural and historical significance of apples, as well as the importance of orchards and apple-related products in agriculture and heritage.
In 1990, the charity Common Ground in the UK as a way to raise awareness about the diversity of apple varieties, encourage the preservation of traditional orchards, and promote the consumption of locally grown apples. Common Ground's founders, Sue Clifford and Angela King, wanted to reconnect people with the land and its fruits, emphasizing the importance of local and sustainable food production.
There are a suggested amount of over 7,000 recognized apple varieties globally. However, the number of apple varieties in the world is vast and can be quite challenging to quantify precisely. There are thousands of apple cultivars, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of flavor, appearance, texture. Because we use apples are used for a variety reasons, such as fresh consumption, baking, or cider production, new varieties are continuously being developed.
Common Apple Varieties
- Red Delicious apples are known for their bright red skin and sweet, mildly tart flavor. They are often enjoyed fresh but can also be used in salads and for baking.
- Gala apples are small to medium-sized and have a sweet, crisp, and mildly tart flavor. They are excellent for snacking and are commonly used in salads.
- Fuji apples are known for their firm texture and sweet, slightly spicy flavor. They are great for eating fresh and hold up well in storage.
- Granny Smith apples are known for their bright green skin and tart, crisp flesh. They are often used in baking and for making apple pies.
- Honeycrisp apples are prized for their sweet and exceptionally crisp texture. They are excellent for snacking and have become increasingly popular in recent years.
- Braeburn apples have a sweet and slightly tart flavor with a crisp texture. They are versatile and can be used for both fresh eating and cooking.
- Pink Lady apples are known for their sweet-tart flavor and crisp texture. They are often enjoyed fresh and are also used in salads.
Not all apple varieties are widely known or commercially available. Many apple varieties are regional specialties, and their cultivation may be limited to specific areas or orchards.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Across the country, early voter participation has started strong.
Here in Louisiana, over 170,000 Louisiana voters cast ballots Friday for the Nov. 5 election, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office.
“Having more people turn out and that’s a good sign,” said Dennis DiMarco with the Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters.
The first few days of early voting have wrapped up. DiMarco says he couldn’t put into words the happiness he felt as 8,074 voters in Jefferson Parish cast early ballots on the first day alone.
He explains the presidential primary shattered the former first-day early voting record of 3,891 votes in 2020.
Jefferson Parish voters also outpaced other large parishes like New Orleans with 7,787 voters on the first day of early voting, East Baton Rouge which tallied 7,528 voters and St. Tammany which managed 7,796 voters.
“We always track prior years. And if we look at the last two presidential elections, two, 16, 2016 and 2020, the first day of early voting and 2024, we have surpassed the total for those two first days, 2016 and 2020,” said DiMarco.
Not only did the first day shatter records for the parish, but DiMarco also said they saw a huge turnout for first-time voters. He calls it an interest and energy he has never seen before.
“My best bet is that we have a record turnout throughout this parish and that people do turn out. So, no matter what spectrum you’re left or right, go vote. That’s your right,” said DiMarco.
However, DiMarco wants to remind people that there is more on the ballot than just the presidential election.
“People should read up. Most people come in. They know who they want for president or Congress, and they get to the amendments. They say, ‘Oh my God, what are these?’ So, we encourage people to do a little bit of homework. You can go to the Secretary of State’s website. So, you can find out before you walk in the polling place what’s on your ballot,” said DiMarco.

The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!
RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) is set to activate school zone flashing beacons at three additional locations starting Thursday, Oct. 17. This phased activation is part of the City’s commitment to ensuring school zones comply with state law and promote safety for students and drivers.
The DPW Sign Shop and Traffic Teams have been working diligently to bring school zones into compliance with Act No. 103, which mandates that school zone cameras operate only during specific times: one hour before and one hour after the beginning of the school day, and one hour before and one hour after the end of the school day. The City is currently reprogramming flashing beacons and updating signage at all school zones citywide.
The following school zone flashers will be activated as part of this phase:
- Westbound Opelousas Avenue at Oliver Street
- Westbound 9800 block of Hammond Street
- Eastbound 1400 block of Camp Street at International School
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits in these zones during the designated times. Speeding violations in school zones will result in citations. Ensuring school zone safety remains a top priority for the City.
Residents can stay informed about active school zones, camera operations, and school zone hours by visiting https://nola.gov/get-school-zone-times. Any school zone citations issued outside the legal hours will be dismissed, and residents with questions about a ticket are encouraged to contact the Parking Adjudication Office at parkingadjudication@nola.gov for assistance.
DPW will continue to provide public updates as more school zone cameras are activated.

affable /ˈæfəbəl/
Definition: Easy to approach or talk to; friendly; pleasantly sociable.
Origin: The word "affable" comes from the Latin word "affābilis," meaning "approachable" or "friendly."
Example: John was an affable person, always smiling and willing to lend a listening ear.
Friendly is a synonym for "affable." It describes someone who is warm, approachable, and easy to talk to. A friendly person is someone who makes others feel comfortable and welcome in their presence. Like "affable," "friendly" is a positive trait that is highly valued in social situations. People who are friendly tend to have a larger social circle and are more likely to be well-liked by others. Being friendly is important in both personal and professional relationships, as it helps to establish trust and build rapport with others.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale
07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:
- Oct. 24 - 27

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, October 21
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE DAY
Each year on October 21st, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day ushers in the flavors of fall. Cheesecake is one of America's favorite desserts and by adding pumpkin, we celebrate the essential flavoring of the season.
This sweet dessert mixes fresh soft cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese, eggs, and sugar to create a base. The crust is made from crushed graham crackers, crushed cookies, pastry, or sponge cake. Pumpkin may be added to cheesecake recipes in various ways. For example, it may be swirled throughout, mixed thoroughly with all ingredients, or layered. Bakers prepare cheesecakes both baked or unbaked. Some bakers flavor cheesecakes and top them with fruit, fruit sauce, chocolate, or whipped cream.
An ancient form of cheesecake may have been a popular dish in ancient Greece. The earliest attested mention of cheesecake is by the Greek physician, Aegimus. He wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes.
James Kraft developed a form of pasteurized cream cheese in 1912. In 1928, Kraft acquired the Philadelphia trademark and marketed pasteurized Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
North America has several different styles of cheesecakes:
- New York-style cheesecake
- Pennsylvania Dutch-style cheesecake
- Philadelphia-style
- Farmer cheese cheesecake
- Country-style cheesecake
- Lactose-free cheesecake
- Cheesecake Kludys
- Chicago Style Cheesecake
- Savory cheesecake

Dobermann
Dobermanns were first bred in the 1880s by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector who ran a dog pound in Apolda in present-day Thuringia in central Germany. With access to dogs of many breeds, he got the idea to create a breed that would be ideal for protecting him.

October 21st Celebrated History
1879
In his Menlo Park, NJ laboratory, Thomas Edison demonstrates the first lasting electric lightbulb. After 1,200 unsuccessful experiments that did not hold up or were short-lived, led Edison to a bulb that burned 40 hours. By the end of the year, Edison would demonstrate the durable bulb to the public.
1940
Ernest Hemmingway publishes the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls. Considered one of the best war novels ever written, the story follows a young American soldier attached to a guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.
1963
The Trimline phone designed by Henry Dreyfuss was installed in a home for the first time. The phone's design offered a freedom that hadn't been possible on previous phones, though the phone was still corded. With the dial on the handset instead of the base unit, users could dial and disconnect without being near the base unit.
2014
Trevor Hunt carved 109 pumpkins in one hour, setting a world record. The record-breaking display took place during the filming of The Meredith Vieira Show in New York City.
October 21st Celebrated Birthdays
Alfred Nobel - 1833
The Swedish chemist and engineer invented dynamite using nitroglycerine. Upon his death, Nobel's will instructed that a bulk of his massive fortune be used to recognize those who "...conferred the greatest benefit to humankind." Today, the world regards the Nobel Prize as the pinnacle of achievement.
Mary Blair - 1911
The American artist and animator's influences and style can be seen in Disney films such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Cinderella.
William A. Mitchell - 1911
As a food chemist, Mitchell developed some of the most iconic convenience foods and snacks we enjoy today. Pop Rocks candy began as an idea for an instantly self-carbonating drink mix. Every Pie Day, millions of Americans celebrate with a dollop of Cool Whip. Yep. He made that, too. His products have even been to space. Tang anyone?
Samuel W. Alderson - 1914
The physicist and engineer developed the first crash-test dummy designed for automobiles. As more people hit the roads after the advent of the automobile, the country came to realize the need for safety measures. In 1966, Congress passed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act which defined safety standards on vehicles, highway design, and more. Enter Samuel Alderson. Before creating crash-test dummies for the automotive industry (aka anthropomorphic test devices), Alderson developed them for the U.S. military and NASA.
Dizzy Gillespie - 1917
The daring jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader was one of the pioneers of bebop. He's known for his sense of humor, puffed cheeks, and playing a bent trumpet. Some of his notable songs include "Ooh-Shoo-Be-Doo-Bee," "Blue 'N' Boogie," and "Salt Peanuts." In 1995, Gillespie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Ursula LeGuin - 1929
The prolific science fiction author is the author of the Earthsea series which follows a young wizard named Ged Sparrowhawk and his adventures at a wizarding school. Publishing began on the 6 book series in 1968 with A Wizard of Earthsea.
Judith Sheindlin - 1942
The former Manhattan family court judge began presiding on the reality television show Judge Judy in 1996. For 25 seasons, she listened to the stories provided by the defendant and the plaintiff, espoused her wisdom, and made rulings.
Ronald McNair - 1950
In 1978, the physicist joined NASA as one of three men selected as the first African American astronaut. His first space flight was aboard the space shuttle Challenger mission STS-41B on February 3, 1984. His next mission aboard Challenger was STS-51L. Due to O-ring issues, the shuttle exploded 73 seconds after launch killing all 7 astronauts on board.
Carrie Fisher - 1956
The actress exploded onto the big screen in 1977 as Leigh in the Star Wars series. Her career spanned 47 years and continues to influence movie-goes today.

1926: Spanish Fort Amusements
Taken by photographer John Mendes during the waning days of the amusement park and resort area at Spanish Fort, you will notice that the ground is already being filled in as part of the massive land reclamation project along the lakefront. Before long the bath houses, amusement rides, casino, restaurants, and pavilions would all be gone.

Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues (Exhibit Opening)
Please join us at The New Orleans Jazz Museum on Friday, October 18th to celebrate the opening of the new exhibit Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues, on the second floor at the New Orleans Jazz Museum from 6-8 PM.
Exhibit Overview:
Although Louisiana is most known musically for Cajun, zydeco, and, of course, jazz, its rich blues tradition often goes unnoticed, or worse, is ignored. Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues is the first comprehensive museum exhibit that tells the complex story of Louisiana blues and sets it in the larger context of the American music tradition.
The many forms of Louisiana blues have been shaped by and reflect the state’s geography, history, and regional differences in culture. Blues from New Orleans has been and continues to be influenced by the city’s ultra rich jazz scene, while blues from southwest Louisiana gains influence from both zydeco and Cajun music styles. And Baton Rouge is one of the unsung American centers for blues music.
Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues includes never-before-seen artifacts, multi-media displays and new interviews with Louisiana blues greats, in the process finally giving due to another great Louisiana music tradition.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
- 10/23/24 & 10/24/24 — Schwäbischer Hochzeitsbraten mit Pilzen, Kräutern, Kartoffelpüree mit Geröstetem Knoblauch
- und Meerrettich und Rotweinsoße und Brezel 19.50 (Stuffed Veal Shoulder with Wild Mushrooms, Onions and Fresh Herbs with Roasted Garlic and Horseradish Mashed Potatoes and Red Wine Sauce and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
- 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50 (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel); Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25 (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

The Project
This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.
The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.
Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.
Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.
Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
